Access 2K and 95 on same machine? (2K & 95)

Is it possible to run Access 2000 and Access 95 on the same machine? I have a potential client who has applications written in both, and I would like to load them all on the same machine if possible.

My machine (Win 2K Pro) has Access 2000 installed on it. What would happen if I installed Access 95? Would I lose 2K?

It is a pain to install an earlier version after Access 2000. You have to rename the msaccess.exe file temporarily to fool the installer and you’ll probably also have to rename the hatten font. It is critical that you install the old version in a separate folder because the executables and many of the library files will have the same names, although that isn’t as likely in 95 and 2000 as it was in 97 and 2000.

Then cross your fingers. I would suggest you also *reinstall* Access 2000 in order to get its file associations back, but do a custom install and tell the installer not to remove the old version.

There are several articles in the MSKB about installing multiple versions of Access on the same machine. Q241141 discusses having Access97 and Access2000 on same machine, but generally they all contain the same information.

Essentially, when installing the 2nd version (be it an earlier or later version), you must be sure of doing 2 things. First, be very firm and tell Windows NOT to replace/update the version currently on disk. Secondly, designate a path for the new installation that won’t interfer with your other installation (Maybe something like: c:Program FilesAccess2000) etc.

You should also be aware that now merely double-clicking a .mdb file to start Access will now cause the most recently installed version of Access.

And finally, you should really consider upgrading from Access95 to Access2000. Actually, you should consider upgrading from Access95 to ANY new version of Access! A95 was notoriously buggy.
