Access 2002 and earlier versions (Access 2002, Win 98 2n E)

If you develop a database in 2002 then split the database can you set it up so that the front end can use Access 97. The person creating and inputting the data has 2002. The people needing the information have 97. We don’t want to have to upgrade all machines yet tp 2002. There is no need for the person with 97 to do anything with the data except maybe print a report or just view the data.

Yes you can do that – BUT . . .
We had some serious problems with corruption and actually lost a few records in an Access 97 back-end when we had some users running a 2000 front-end and a 97 back-end. I also have seen situations where the performance really gets bad. So approach it with caution, and as expediently as your situation allows, upgrade the other user to 2002. I didn’t think you could have an Access 97 frontend talking to an Access 2000 (or 2002) backend. We have been trying the opposite (an Access 2000 frontend talking to an Access 97 backend).

We also have had very strange things happen, and happen frequently, when one Access 97 backend was being connected to by both Access 2000 and Access 97 frontends. I would not recommend that unless you enjoy playing with corrupted databases.
