    Hello,
I just got notification that there are updates from Microsoft for my Win7 Pro install; one “important” and three “optional”. One of the optional updates is KB2952664, which I believe “snoops” your install sending info back to MS indicating if your software would be compatible with an upgrade to Win10 (at least that’s my interpretation . . .). No thanks.

The “important” update (KB3035583) carries no real explanation except to say: “This update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available to the user. It applies to a computer that is running Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Before you install this update, check out the Prerequisites section.”

Hmmm . . . what the heck does that tell me?

    Any insight is appreciated.
    Thanks ahead of time and
    Regards,
    Bob

It seems to have been released initially as an optional update for Windows 8.1, then a few days later as an important update for Windows 7. So far as I can tell, it seems to be another update like KB2952664 that is aimed at facilitating future OS upgrades e.g. from Windows 7 to 8.1 or 10. I’ve hidden it pending eventual advice in Patch Watch.

I’ve hidden both of those along with the Skype update.

Like Tandor in #3, it looks like they’re the pre-requisite files for upgrading W7 SP1 and 8.1 to W10 after it’s released.

Pretty sure this detail was given with the original release of KB3035583 (now overwritten by the current useless data), for KB2952664, see http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2952664 – judging by some of the files replaced by this update, it looks like it changes details collected cf. the earlier/original versions.

Quite why this has been done I can only guess – telemetry data from users already having upgraded their W7 to W10 maybe?

      EDIT: re. KB3035583, there’s a partial breakdown here http://www.myce.com/news/windows-update-silently-installs-windows-10-downloader-75647/

My guess is that they’re testing the waters for adding W10 to the Optional updates side of Windows Update ready for Release.

      Satrow,
      Thank you!
The last sentence in the article you cited is VERY interesting: “If Microsoft however decides to make KB3035583 an important update it will install automatically with other Windows update.”.
Well, MS DID in fact make it “important”.
I am glad I hid the update, and I also feel still further justified that I have had automatic updates turned off ever since Win 98 days, thank you.
      Currently, I am VERY HAPPY with Win 7 . . .

Once you install KB3035583 you will ( at some point ) be getting Ads.
      Good article here: http://www.slashgear.com/microsoft-update-quietly-preps-windows-7-8-1-for-windows-10-06377434/
“Microsoft update quietly preps Windows 7, 8.1 for Windows 10”

So it seems that Microsoft will be resorting to advertisements to convince users to take advantage of the free update to Windows 10, which will be available for only a year. Whether that gets annoying really quick or not will depend on how Microsoft executes it. But for those who are already wary of this new feature, you can simply skip the optional update. At least until Microsoft makes it an important one.

Ads, like a popup from the Taskbar, are only likely to arrive after the release of W10.

If these ads etc. are likely to be a problem for corporate users, MS’ll likely provide some way of blocking them, like the blocking toolkits for IE10 and 11.

That would be my guess also. It will be a “nag” to upgrade. I hid the update this morning.

This “Important” Kb 3035583 update has in Prerequisites: To install this update, you must have April 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 (2919355) installed in Windows 8.1. Or, install Windows 7 SP1…….. April 2014 Update Rollup Link below

Clking the Rollup Link nets [ System Tip: This article applies to a different version of Windows than the one you are using. Content in this article may not be relevant to you.]…… No mention of Win 7 SP1 appears on the page……….

So, they are asking Win 7 SP1 users to Install an Important Update with a Prerequisite that is NOT intended for Win 7SP1. Right??????

The Rollup is only for W8.1. Prerequisites for W7 are only that it has to be up to SP1 level.

Thanks for the clarification. For some reason my amateur’s expertise tried to make this more complicated than it was,

KB3035583 is listed in my Windows Update as “Optional”, not “Important” (Win7Pro SP1 x64).

That’s how mine was listed also on win 7 Pro SP1 x64, before I hid it.

Many of you have said that you had “hidden” an update – how do you do that?
I am also being offered an update (KB3021917) (to Win 7 64bit with SP1) which says: “This update performs diagnostics in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) in order to determine whether performance issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed.” So it sounds like KB2952664 mentioned by somebody above. It is marked as ‘important’, but is not pre-selected by Windows Update. I wonder whether this one should be installed or “hidden”?

Right click on the update and one of the options will be to Hide this Update.
As to KB3021917, I installed it in Feb. and have shown no ill effects. YMMV

When you go to Windows Update to see what it wants to install, click on it and it will list the updates.

Right click on whatever you want to hide and that will give you the option to click on and then click on OK bottom right.

I’ve just been given 1 Optional update and clicking on that, found it was KB2952664 so have hidden that as I won’t be upgrading this laptop.

Satrow, given the way MS obfuscates matters, I’m convinced they only hire people with learning disabilities when it comes to writing. Interestingly, many people with learning disabilities are male, very bright, good with computers, and have a h–l of a time writing (or explaining) anything. One of my 2nd cousins fits this mold and is working on his masters in computer science.

KB 3035583 caught my attention right away. I installed it on 1 computer because of the Importance rating. It gave no problems. However, looking into it I couldn’t help but notice Microsoft’s cryptic explanation for the update and I submitted a remark to MS support about the insufficient information for the need of the update. It appears kb2952664 falls into the same boat. What are they really for?

        What are they really for?

See #6 for a guess and an early published breakdown, time will tell 🙂

Thanks, JK, looks like it’s little more than fluffing up of the original MYCE topic in #6 though.

I uninstalled 3035583 last night. This morning it appeared in windows updates with a priority rating of recommended. The brief description now says it addresses issues in windows. Running Win 7 Pro x64. I added it to the hidden list.
