I’m looking for a good learning/tutorial book about Windows 7. As much as I find this forum very helpful, it looks like I’ll need a real book with me when I upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. The book has be good and thorough, not for the tech-savvy geek or an IT pro but for a normal guy who just installed the new OS.

    What would you recommend?

    TIA

I have to recommend the tutorial section of sevenforums.com. MVP Shawn Brink has done an excellent job of writing a tutorial for just about everything imaginable.

Here is an index of tutorials: http://www.sevenforu…rial-index.html

Woody “somebody” has a pretty good tutorial titled “Windows 7 for Dummies”. Stop by a bookstore and leaf through one and see if it meets your needs. I have one and it has helped point me in the right direction on lots of questions.

      Internet reading:
Paul Thurrott’s SuperSite for Windows is a usefull and informative site for Windows in general, and Windows 7 specifically.
Windows Weekly with Paul Thurrott & Leo Laporte is a decent Windows based podcast too.
Security Now with Steve Gibson with Leo Laporte is a podcast for Windows related security issues.

Whilst not a “how to” guide, you may find the new “Windows 7 Product Guide” of use. Download (free) at:

I highly recommend “Windows 7 – Inside Out” by Ed Bott, Carl Siechert, and Craig Stinson.

I’ve been recommended to get this book: “Windows 7: The Missing Manual”. Has anyone here heard about it?

“Windows 7: The Missing Manual” is a good book. It is slightly less technical and easier to read than “Windows 7 Inside Out”, yet it covers a wealth of information.

Greetings rfe777. You can read a bit about the book at: http://www.powells.com/ then search using windows 7 the missing manual (it is also available for purchase at Amazon.com)

To quote from the review at POWELLS BOOKS:

      “Synopsis:
This jargon-free manual explains Windows 7 features so clearly that it should come in the box with this OS. Like its predecessors, this book illuminates its subject with technical insight, plenty of wit, and hardnosed objectivity for users at all experience levels.”

      “Synopsis:
Beta testers of Windows 7 are singing its praises, but when it comes time for ordinary mortals to learn this new system, Microsoft offers little help. David Pogue’s Windows 7: The Missing Manual comes to the rescue. Like its predecessors, this book illuminates its subject with technical insight, plenty of wit, and hardnosed objectivity for beginners, veteran standalone PC users, and those who know their way around a network.”

I recommend a book named Plain & Simple for novice users of Windows 7. It’s written by Jerry Joyce and Marianne Moon, published by Microsoft. It has loads of pictures that teach you the simplest ways to get things done with Windows 7.

I have the paperback and just starting to learn what I can do with Windows 7
