    Hey Y’all,

This one really has me stumped!

Trying to help a neighbor connect a Lenovo Laptop to a Spectrum Wireless Router.

He had been connected fine then he updated something (couldn’t remember what) and now he can’t connect.

    Steps taken so far:

    • Used Device Manager to delete the wi-fi device and rebooted to reload the driver. Duh! didn’t have connectivity since no wi-fi and no cable to connect wired.
    • Took the laptop home and connected with cable, updated the driver and connected to my Wi-Fi, also Spectrum but different router.
    • He picked it up and took it back to his place and it wouldn’t connect!
    • Next day I went over, cable in hand this time, and tried to connect w/same result. Windows wouldn’t even enumerate the router! I connected to his Wi-Fi with my Phone w/o problem. He also has several other devices that are connected ok.
    • Connected with a cable and repeated deleting the Wi-Fi device and rebooting, same result.
    • Checked all the computer settings for Wi-Fi and everything looks just fine.

I’m out of ideas, y’all have any?

May the Forces of good computing be with you!

      Check IPV4 or IPV6?

Points to something on his laptop.
I’ve seen installed VPNs change Firewall settings. Check the Firewall settings?
Try Safe mode with network connection to rule out third party software.

Simple—throw Windows 11 out the window and install Linux on the computer. This will solve the issue. Windows 11 is terrible with wifi connections.

If he does not want to learn Linux and wants to keep using the terrible Windows 11, than you can try these:

      • Run Diagnose network problems. If it fix, than your all set;
      • Otherwise, run this commamds from command prompt as Admin account:
        • Type netsh winsock reset and select Enter.
Type netsh int ip reset and select Enter.
Type ipconfig /release and select Enter.
Type ipconfig /renew and select Enter.
Type ipconfig /flushdns and select Enter.
      • If still not working, uninstall Nov and Oct updates from computer. Restart but make sure not connect to Internet with cable and wifi switch is turn off. Start computer  and log in and turn on Wifi than see if Wifi works. These two updates have been report to cause issues with Wifi by several users.
      • If still not working, disable fast start from Power settings. Restart computer and see if Wifi works.
      • Otherwise, if still not working,he must switch to Linux. Windows is a terrible OS from my experience.

Have you connected your computer to his router? Make sure the router hasn’t been updated and caused the problem.

(I’m typing this from an 11 on wifi and it’s fine)

My money’s with @PKCano ‘s suggestion above. Check the stack to see if the laptop has only IPV6 or IPV4 enabled and, if necessary, enable both.

Also check the same settings on the person’s router…is it perhaps only using IPV6 or only using IPV4? If so, see if there’s a way to enable both. As Susan said above, perhaps there was an update to the router that changed things, such as limiting it to IPV6, for example. After all, the laptop did successfully connect both wired and wireless to your router at your place.

can you get into the cable modem and verify the firewall on the modem  there is not causing issue?

      1. check and make sure dhcp is handing out the right ip addresses. if static then change it to be dhcp .
      2. did you try the forget wifi settings?

Maybe the router is blocking the Lenovo’s MAC address.
