I’m in a quandary and hope the bright problem-solving minds here can help me find an answer.

My husband goes in for surgery on his left shoulder in two weeks. He’s gonna have the tendon at the shoulder disconnected and reattached to his shoulder bone with a screw. Ouch. Fortunately, he’s right handed so he will be able to do most things for himself. I’m trying to be the helpful wife, looking for what I need to change to help him out. The biggest problem so far is the toilet paper which is going to be a big challenge.

Below is a diagram of our bathroom. As you can see the toilet paper dispenser is let of the toilet. He won’t be able to use his left arm for several days and even then won’t be able to reach back at that angle with his left arm. The counter will also be too far to reach with his left arm. And placing toilet paper on the floor is a bad idea for the obvious reason it’ll get wet from the shower plus we have two cats and a dog that think they own the bathroom. Last night I dreamt of hanging it from the ceiling or the bathroom hook (on wall just outside shower door) but dangling toilet paper would probably take two hands, one to hold it steady while the other pulls.

The only thing I can think to do is place a second dispenser on the wall in front of the toilet, just outside the shower. But that’s where we step out of the shower so it’s gonna get wet there and will get in the way. Even if I put it there just for a little while until he’s better then I’ll have holes in the wall afterward.

There’s got to be a better way. Suggestions and ideas gratefully appreciated.

Depending on how the shower door opens (sliding; inside or outside), could you put it here with some velcro which would make it easy to remove later?

Maybe but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a dispenser like that. The shower has glass sliding doors all the way across.

Or in the location suggested by Big Al, but affixed using one or two suction cups – they should be able to withstand moisture, at least for a limited period.

I might have a better time finding a dispenser that attaches with suction cups. Both velcro and suction cups are good ideas. I’ll also have to check tonight to see if there’s enough room there or if putting one there might be in the way of sitting on the pot.

Rotate body 180 degrees about the vertical axis?

This gave me quite a chuckle. I don’t really think that’s gonna be possible.

What about a free-standing one? The only one I was able to find during a very cursory search was here, but I’m sure there are others. We’ve had one for several years and you simply move it where you want it. No suction pads, no fixings, nothing permanent and located where it’s the least inconvenient/painful to use.

That is an excellent idea. I’ll see if I can find one local or maybe eBay.

Along the same line of thinking there is this link Toilet paper caddys that might give you some ideas.

        Also, have you considered Bidets?

Scrolling through this link we found some holders made out of wire coat hangers. The penny pincher he is, Bob loved the idea and right away went hunting for his pliers. Below is a pic of what he made. We’re either gonna find a way to put a hook on the shower door or hang it from my bathrobe pocket. (Bathrobes hang just outside shower door.) Now to see what other mischief I can stir up before his surgery.

Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to simply leave a roll on the tank which he could pick before sitting down?

Good note. This is a newer toilet with lid on the back just about as low as the toilet seat itself. Presumably to save water. The toilet paper could sit on the counter I suppose. If I can’t find a free standing holder in time then this would make a better idea than drilling holes for sure. If he’ll remember to pick it up. Even after 19 years of marriage I’m sure as heck not gonna come in and get it for him if he forgets.

          That did it!
My mother, strings on mittens, through the sleeves.
Next winter I’m doing it for myself, leather gloves costing what they do now …
          But I digress.

          (1) Loop of string through the roll, hangs around his neck.
          (2) Thread trouser belt through roll; roll doubles as lumbar support when not in use.
          (3) That Rowan Atkinson skit where he (Rowan Atkinson, not your husband) is in the line-up waiting to greet Queen Elizabeth, a cunningly folded sheet of 3-ply lodged in the breast pocket of his dinner jacket.

I often think back to when my older brother went to work in the mines near Port Hedland in the early 1970’s when he was 18. In an accident he broke his left collar bone and right arm.
They flew him back to Perth once he was patched up. But we weren’t home. We were on holidays and my brother had to stay with the neighbours for a week.
          SHE was brave.

I go with the free standing one.

HERE is the one I had in mind. Add an extension…

Probably not really practical, but for the sake of completeness I should mention the ”Western” Japanese toilet….
