In my earlier post, I asked for ideas about blocking the Windows 10 upgrade from Win 7 or Win 8.1, in a very late stage. For most people, running GWX

Woody, I’ve seen you suggest NOT uninstalling the culprit patches in a few posts, but what I’ve been doing (on Win7 systems) is…

      (1) Set the ‘Diagnostics Tracking Service’ to ‘Disabled’ via services.msc
      (2) Locate and uninstall the 2952664, 2977759, 3022345, 3035583, 3068708, 3075249, 3080149, 3083324, and 3090045 patches if found.
      (3) Download and run the GWX Control Panel.
      (4) Locking down Automatic Updates.

I haven’t seen any noticeable issues with uninstalling the patches. Yet. Am I missing something?

In fact, what you’ve hit upon is the approach I’m probably going to recommend next week in InfoWorld. Combined with disabling Customer Experience Improvement Program – and making one more recommendation that I think will be highly controversial. 😉

Woo-hoo it works! Thanks to Woody and all the contributors.

      @Minnie –

      Great!

Does Windows Update still look like the screenshot – is it still threatening to install Windows 10?

The day you went to def-con 3-I checked windows update and saw “upgrade to windows 10”. Thought I had uninstalled all the nagware but it snuck back in somehow..I used the instructions in “How to get rid of the ‘Your upgrade to Windows 10 is ready’ lock” article. Those instructions worked for me–no signs of windows 10 upgrade anywhere-got rid of leftover windows 10 icon by resetting notification area icons.
      Windows 8.1

      Glad it worked!

Ya ever notice that those are the ones that end up working out the best in the long run? 😉

“Does Windows Update still look like the screenshot – is it still threatening to install Windows 10?”

Yes it does. I tried a single, small one first and when that went through OK, I crossed my fingers and selected the rest.

Great. So we have a partial solution, with the sword still dangling over your head. Argh.

I manually ran WU on my two desktop machines today. On one of them, I kept seeing Upgrade to Windows 10 as soon as I checked for available updates. I looked at the available updates and checked only the security-related ones, but went I clicked on OK, the opening screen still indicated that I would be downloading and installing Windows 10.

On the third try I noticed that down in the right hand corner of the available updates page it said that I had checked one optional update, and lo and behold it was Windows 10 Pro. I unchecked it, checked the security updates again, and returned to the main screen, which now shows only that I have checked 15 “important” updates, and nothing said about Windows 10.

I downloaded and ran Josh Mayfield’s GWX Control Panel, which indicated that I did not have the download on the machine. This suggests to me that people are seeing Windows Update apparently refuse to update without installing Win 10 because Microsoft has listed the Win 10 “upgrade” among the optional updates, and checked it without informing the user. Microsoft’s trickery becomes ever more extreme.
