Microsoft Update Health Tools is offered to devices through Windows Update as update KB4023057. This update is applicable for both Windows consumer and commercial devices, with a slightly different purpose and functionality.

On Windows consumer devices, this update helps remediate smooth functioning of Windows Update.

For commercial devices, this update is recommended for Windows Update for Business (WUfB) Deployment Service for managing Feature and Quality Updates.

The Microsoft Update Health Tools is required for Expediting security updates through Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Graph…

      I’m confused.

The attached screenshot shows the newest installation date of KB4023057 as 26-Jan-2023.

The linked URL shows, for example, Windows 10 x64 component filedates as 14-Dec-2022 and screenshots showing a version of 3.70.0.0.

My own Windows 10 Pro 22H2 shows an installation date for KB4023057 v3.70.0.0 as 09-Feb-2023.

How is this a new, updated version of KB4023057? It appears to be a version from last year that was released months ago.

And this time I notice that the filestamps for the Windows 10 x64 components have been updated, ever though the first screenshot hasn’t been updated. Oh well, nearly there. Must try harder, Microsoft.

            • #2555153

The screenshot doesn’t show files, and the date of the highlighted entry (the only relevant one) is correct (1/26/2023).

The last update installed on my Windows 10 is 1/26/2023
The file on Microsoft Download Center is 2/17/2023

The date of a zip file doesn’t mean much. What are the dates of UpdHealthTools.msi within?

Who needs to go digging into an .msi file when MS lays it all out on the page for KB4023057? Note the file dates in the attachment. Although those shown are for Windows 10 22H2, the file dates for all other supported versions of Windows have nearly identical dates to those shown.

              KB4023057-latest

All anyone has to do is to go to the link in @Alex5723 ‘s original post and scroll down the page until they get to the section labeled “File information”. Below that listing are drop-down listings for Windows 11 21H1 (SIC, they mislabeled it on the page!) and 22H2, as well as Windows 10 version 20H2, 21H2 and 22H2. The listings for Windows 10 also include drop-down listings for the 32 bit versions of the OS.

Because the “Date published” of the “manual download” is months earlier than those file dates.

What’s the date of those five files on your computer?

What’s the date of those five files on your computer?

None! I have never installed KB4023057.

However, what is seen on the page suggests that MS updated the installer in early April (3-5 April), but didn’t “admit” to updating it until a few days ago (April 27th). Because of this, I agree with Alex, in that it looks like there’s a new version of it out there. As of yet, though, I haven’t been offered it, and I’ve got a setting in GPEdit to not get offered it until I change said setting. Changing that setting will allow it to potentially show up in wushowhide, at which time I’ll immediately hide it.

My kudos to @Alex5723 for the “heads up”.

UPDATE: I have undertaken to actually look inside the msi installer and the file dates within are still those from December of 2022! I just downloaded the file prior to composing this updated note, so it’s a fresh as one can get as of the date and time of this edit (2156Z 30April2023). Strange how MS updates the KB article to show newer file dates, but doesn’t update the actual file(s) that deal with this tool that are available for download (insert the expletive of your choice here).

Not strange at all. IMO its sole purpose is to target third-party apps which seek to change the default behaviour of MS’ automated Windows Update mechanism.

As such, it appears to be a fight-back against the active ecosystem that seeks to wrestle control back for the end-user (albeit contrary to the Windows EULA).

I’ve no doubt that we will see more iterations of KB4023057.

I’ve always just let KB4023057 install and never had any issues. I control when my Windows updates install using Group Policy, and then let all but the preview and optional updates run. 🙂

      @Alex5723 (and others here)-

Today (just a few minutes ago), I was finally offered the latest iteration of KB4023057 in WU, which I promptly used wushowhide to hide. The offering was titled “2023-04 Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB4023057)”.

So, it looks like they’re still titling it with April’s dates, despite what @b has noticed and documented above.

Microsoft states the KB4023057 update may perform the following when installed:

This update may request your device to stay awake longer to enable the installation of updates.

Note The installation will respect any user-configured sleep configurations and also your “active hours” when you use your device the most.

This update may try to reset network settings if problems are detected, and it will clean up registry keys that may be preventing updates from being installed successfully.

This update may repair disabled or corrupted Windows operating system components that determine the applicability of updates to your version of Windows 10.

This update may compress files in your user profile directory to help free up enough disk space to install important updates.

This update may reset the Windows Update database to repair the problems that could prevent updates from installing successfully. Therefore, you may see that your Windows Update history was cleared.
