A network of two halves

A friend has asked for my advice on a networking issue.
They live in an old farmhouse and one wing is currently let out to short term tenants. Next year they hope to be using the wing for holiday lets, so people will be coming and going.

They have one broadband connection coming into their house, and they currently have their own home network so that the main PC and their laptop can share resources, printer etc.

What they would like to do is let the tenants have wireless access to the internet but not have access to the home network.

Is it possible to set this up in a fairly foolproof way? They are well set back from the road so, in principle, there’s no need for the tenants’ half of the network to be password protected; but they want to keep a reasonably strong level of protection between their personal network and the tenants’.

With what is almost certainly a home based ADSL router it is highly unlikley this can be done easily.

You can go the two router option, you could purchase a router with hotel or guest wi-fi access or you could flash an appropriate piece of router hardware with something like DD_WRT or possibly CoovaAP which have an option to segment the lan from the wi-fi.

Another possible option although a bit more expensive is something like the Draytek Vigor 2820n, which if I remember correctly allows you to separate the LAN ports and Wireless.
