I’ve been playing around with WSL and LLM’s again, and I’ve had to restore a Windows image a few times in the last couple of weeks. When I restore the Windows image, I lose my PIN, have to go into accounts, remove it and then set it up again.

I run a Standard user account most of the time, and the PIN is quick and easy for UAC. Yesterday I got my WSL way out of whack and decided to start over today. I restored a Windows image, and booted into the Admin account just to reset the PIN, but since I was there anyway, I started working on WSL.

I got everything up and running, got Llama 3.3:70B installed and OpenWebUI, and it was working fine (TUT upcoming soon). I decided to sign off the Admin account and go back to my Standard user, and there are no menu entries for Ubuntu 24.04. It isn’t listed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, either.

I can get it started using Powershell and get Ubuntu running, but I’m a bit puzzled that it’s not anywhere in my account.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

I found the answer. Linux in WSL is only installed per user. There are a couple of workarounds that are supposed to work, but none I tried worked. But I can open it using PowerShell, so I can deal with it until I figure something out.

I might even wipe it and go through my TUT for a reinstallation to check out my TUT.

I’ve got a desktop shortcut that works:

        C:\Windows\System32\wsl.exe -d Ubuntu

It opens Ubuntu in root, so I use

        su – bbearren

to get to my user account. Works fine. The shortcut even has the Linux penguin icon.

I might even wipe it and go through my TUT for a reinstallation to check out my TUT.

I booted into the B side of my daily driver and followed my TUT. It works just fine, not a single hiccup. I’ll get my TUT refined and post it.

        >>>edit: I tried editing the shortcut to C:\Windows\System32\wsl.exe -d Ubuntu su – bbearren and now it opens Ubuntu with my user account.<<<
