That’s a downgrade. Here are some suggestions to get the Lounge:

      • Add sort by option for newer, popular[based on likes or voteup], older, most replies.
      • Add karma/voteup again.
      • Make Popular sorting as default which will improve the best comments listed on top.

Yes, it is a downgrade. A very intentional one.

Add sort by option for newer, popular[based on likes or voteup], older, most replies. Add karma/voteup again. Make Popular sorting as default which will improve the best comments listed on top.

The “sort replies by” option isn’t available in bbPress, without significant programming – which is expensive, error-prone, contributes to hackability, and very hard to figure out. I know Reddit sorts by Upvotes and that’s great for what they’re doing, but it isn’t really applicable here. The Karma score floated all over the place, for no discernible reason.

I think that is the most annoying thing about Reddit, and the reason I avoid it as much as possible.

      Good move, I think.

I didn’t really sense a fundamental difference between “Thanking” someone for a post and “Voting Up” someone’s post.

Glitches aside, from a human perspective “voting down” can’t help but cause negative feelings.

My experience concurs with this.  Voting down always eventually ends in abuse by untrustworthy users and spam bots

I’m with Noel. I’m just fine with the “downgrade”. Less confusion, fewer glitches. I also like to arrange the comments by date and time posted, with each conversation grouped together. Much easier for my old brain to keep everything straight. 🙂

I had no idea what the difference was between Thanks and Vote Up, and Karma meant nothing to me either, so it seems like a good result to get rid of the clutter.

Ever since I discovered this excellent site, the layout has puzzled me a bit.

On the home page are several news articles, with titles in bold type and underlined with the dashes. The article that prompted me to write this is

      “A few cosmetic changes…”

Clicking on that link on the home page takes me to another page (call it a “secondary” page)

      https://www.askwoody.com/2017/a-few-cosmetic-changes/

which has the same 4 paragraphs of text as the post on the home page. On this “secondary” page are TWO identical links

      Comment on the AskWoody Lounge
Follow this link to join the discussion

      to the actual forum page

      https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/a-few-cosmetic-changes/

      where the replies/discussion are.

My main point is — why is the “secondary” page there at all, since it has the same text as the home page and just contains links to the actual forum page where the replies are? The secondary page has no additional content, so why not make the dashed-underline link on the home page take the reader directly to the actual forum page?

      Smaller points:

On the actual forum page, shouldn’t the original post (the 4 paragraphs on the home page) be the first post, rather than the fragment currently there with a link BACK to the “secondary” page?

Again, on the actual forum page, there is a link at the top “Comment on the AskWoody Lounge” but the target of that link is the actual forum page, we are already there…

Ah, that was why “Karma” has gone.

Well, if these changes will make the site more stable and less buggy, then I am all for it. I agree with others that “Thanks” and “Voting Up” do not seem to be any different, anyway.

Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.
