• A different 21H1 permissions issue – denied

Has anyone had this experience after upgrading to 21H1 (I upgraded from 2004 – W10 Pro 64 on a Dell Latitude 5500)? I have one very old program that I use but the install failed, as access was denied to copy files to a Windows subdirectory, So I ran it as Administrator – same result. So I figured I’d simply move the files manually. Turned out I had no write or modify, rename, etc permissions in Windows or its subdirectories. It said administrator permission was required. But I am the administrator and only user! Anyway, I fooled around with permissions and finally had to take ownership of the entire Windows directory and subdirectories to allow me to copy the files over. The install file had no problem writing the registry entries, but still couldn’t copy the files – that I did, as I said, manually. So it was a kludge, but it worked, but taking ownership that way is not something I’d prefer to do. This was no issue up through 20H2. Anyone else seen this?

Yeah, the folders off root (C:) are protected by default.  Most of them only System can modify.  You can take ownership of individual ones if needed or the entire drive (not a great idea) in Pro.  If you don’t already have them, there are utilities that put Take Ownership and Reset Premissions in the context menu.  Very handy vs. all the playing with Security Tabs you have to do manually.

The best place to get both, along with a Change Owner menu entry is in winaerotweaker.  Excellent utility, use the portable version and pick the tweaks you want.  This thing’s a true gem!  Clear explanations for registry changes every tweak makes.

Looks like the latest version can obliterate Win 11’s giant start menu and restore the old one.  Nice!

Try running the old program in compatibility mode. W7 may be a good place to start.
      Right click >Properties > Compatibility

      cheers, Paul
