    2) hmmn I’m thinking that I don’t have enough info here, anyway A 10 page document takes 1+2+4+8+16+…+256+512 = 1023 units of time. Thus 1 unit of time equals 1.5 minutes. Thus the 50 4 page documents take 50×10.5 minutes = 525 minutes. The 75 2 page documents take 75×4.5 minutes = 337.5 minutes and the 75 XX page documents take … I have no idea

      You’re partially correct:
      CORRECT – 2 page documents take 75×4.5 minutes = 337.5

I have edited the problem to “close the loop”….sorry. As for your units of time, please direct your attention to the 4th sentence…

Opps – I have you the time for a 3 page document.

So, 50 4 page documents take 1125 mins (22.5 mins each), 75 2 page documents take 337.5 mins and 75 7 page documents take 14287.5 mins (190.5 mins each) for a total of 15750 mins

Edited by HansV – mistakenly had 1) instead of 2)

        2) XX = 7.
From “If each page takes twice as long as the last, a 10 page document would take 1534.5 minutes”, you can find that the first page takes 1.5 minute.
The 50 4-page documents took 22.5 minutes each for a total of 1,125 minutes.
The 75 2-page documents took 4.5 minutes each for a total of 337.5 minutes.
        That leaves 14,287.5 minutes for the remaining 75 documents, or 190.5 minutes each. Dividing by 1.5 results in 127 = 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 + 64, so these documents have 7 pages.

whisperOk, with Jezza’s help, I can see a pattern, but is the first number 465 or 456?

        • #966156

whisperEither way, it has no effect on the puzzle…. the puzzle can be re-arranged as such, however you’ll see one static portion, that should let the answer *jump* out at you
