Just got this report from BM: Just thought I would let you know that the 2004 update was a complete mess for me. It was pushed, I didn’t choose it. I

AskWoody LoungerOctober 22, 2020 at 3:18 pm #2306310are the files actually gone or does the jammed-down-your-throat-at-every-feature-update office365 c2r version of office reset the default file types and default application?
Hey look! Another Feature Update!
You mean I shouldn't click Check for Updates?
Where is the Any key?

AskWoody LoungerOctober 22, 2020 at 7:31 pm #2306357Oh my… I am still running Office 2010 for a while longer on a few machines with 1909-pro. Just in case… I made sure the GP feature update deferral was set to 365 days on them. And just in case Windows blows that off, I used Stoppdate10 to set all deferral dates to 2099 until this blows over.

GuestOctober 24, 2020 at 10:18 pm #2306772Sounds to me like the main thing to do would be to make a backup copy of all your Office files before applying the update–like to a USB drive or online or something. I personally use Backblaze, since it just automatically backs up all files for a month by default.
But I also like to keep a 1:1 backup of my boot partition on my hard drive, so, if my SSD dies, I still can immediately boot back in while I’m waiting for a replacement to ship. So I can also use that backup if something goes wrong. All I have to do is either edit the BIOS or remove the SSD, and I can instantly boot.
