I had my Access 97 Design Master on a laptop whose hardrive irretrievably went into the next parallel dimension. I’ve since installed 2000 on the Win98 box where the replica lives, and it’s warning me that conversion of the replica will destroy all the forms and reports (I tried it on one database and it really did!). I confess I had willy-nilly strewn numerous replicas about, and there seems no way to synchronize and make the current replica a design master. Any bright ideas for getting out of this one?

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 26, 2001 at 2:19 pm #511811OK, at the risk of sounding really stupid, I had heard many times that the Office Developer Edition is the way to go when you want to create these data bases. I had designed a couple, mostly basic, but one is fairly complicated (to me). I do not own or have not used this edition. What will it get me over and above say the Office 97 Professional version I have now if I invest in it? Are the benifits significant? I don’t program full time but am required to maintain the ones I have created. Any input is appreciated. Thanks
Kevin

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 26, 2001 at 2:27 pm #511812Thanks for responding Father. I had drooled over the developer edition, but felt I was too much of a newbie to make use of it
I’ve been saving my shekels for a server, so I can install Exchange and stop schlepping the Contact list back and forth between everyone in our peer to peer group. It might be an option to see if M$ has it available as a download though.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 26, 2001 at 3:42 pm #511828I always install the developer edition, so I don’t know whether the recover design master option is available on the professional version. I’ve used it when my design master has gone belly up, and it works properly. When you sync two replicas, the “recover design master” option shows up at the bottom of the dialog, so if you don’t see it, it must be limited to the developer’s edition. If you can’t sync any replicas to each other, try creating a new replica from one of the existing ones. Then try syncing those two and see if the recover design master option appears on the dialog.
There is also a wizard from Microsoft that will convert a replicated database back to a normal database. I’ve attached a copy in case you can’t find it on the site. It only works on design masters, and is 97 specific.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 29, 2001 at 5:50 am #512019Thanks for the help and file, Charlotte. Once I opened it, it wants me to run it from inside Ac97 (which I’ve replaced with 2K on all machines). I looked at your other post about your boss having changed the name of his .exe files in order to install Office97 on top of 2K, so I’m going to try that. I’m concerned lest it change the DLL files though??? The only alternative I can think of is to create a bootable partition on my disk, install 97 on that, copy the .mdb over then run your program to straighten it out. Any advice on the DLL question would be appreciated.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 30, 2001 at 5:54 am #512181Bingo!! It worked! (Office Pro does have the Recover Design Master option, but after running it the individual tables, etc. still show the yin-yang replicated sign, and converting to 2K will still nuke Reports and Forms). Running the Add-In Charlotte posted makes a non-replicated copy of the design master, and the conversion to 2K goes just fine. Thanks, all.
