Hello! Since this new resource has opened up to us, I’ll just add this to my list of places where I’m trying to fix this issue. Dell won’t help.

I have a DELL XPS M1730 Laptop with two nVidia GeForce M8700 cards in it. The problem I’m having is that in the WIndows Device Manager, only ONE of these cards shows up (2 showed up when this machine ran Vista 32). There are no unrecognized devices, Windows just doesn’t know it’s there. Does anyone have any down and dirty methods for making Windows realize that I have 2 GPUs installed? I miss my SLI (for video production and 2.5D, I’m not a gamer).

    Thank you!

    Eric

What have you tried to date. If you used the driver that came with Windows 7, head over to nvidia and download the latest version 195.62 (Dec 4, 2009). May also want to see if any of the software products have updates.

I have tried installing new drivers. I also did report it as a bug to nVidia, because earlier version release notes show that some machines were only showing a single GPU in Device Manager. I didn’t think the driver software would do something that low-level, but maybe they can.

When I removed drivers, Windows wouldn’t find the hardware at all. Someone somewhere else mentioned that there could be an address conflict that’s not being reported also. I didn’t see anything in BIOS settings as far as hardware addresses which doesn’t surprise me since Dell never seems to let you do any real work on their systems.

Another suggestion I have heard is a simple BIOS flash, even to the same version, but I can’t do that because my Power Jack is also not recognizing my AC Adapter and won’t charge the battery (which has to be at 10% to do a flash). A tech up the street can’t get the single jack, so I’m going to have to get the mobo replaced soon anyway. If things work fine after that, I’ll report back here, but I just didn’t know if there was anyway to force Windows to find the GPU.
