Note you must have at least the updates from a year ago (October 2022 security updates for 22H2) installed before using these links on your 22H2 to get it to 23H2

Indeed, so fast I was left wondering if it had actually done anything.

Where may I find more info about this package, please.

I’d like to know as I have a stubborn Lenovo laptop that refuses to update every time there is a new W11 incarnation.

        Web-search the KB. For example.

enablement packages should be fast as they just set some switches ON.

Well yes, obviously, but until Patch Lady posted on the subject, how would I have known the KB?

I was not familiar with the expression ‘enablement package’ so that was something else I couldn’t search for, but what are the relevant switches, and why are they not ‘on’ in the first place?

They are showing in Susan’s posted URLs.

‘enablement package’ is replacement for Feature update (new version).

Windows has many functions that are off until Microsoft decides to enable them and turn them on after beta tested by insiders, beta testers…

It installed like a charm. I had no issues. Thanks to Susan.

Since I use InControl, is it enough for me to simply reset it to Win11 23H2 before running the .msu enablement package? Or should I just disable it fully before running the .msu, then set it to 23H2?
      Thanks,
      John.

Releasing it via InControl allows Windows Update to perform the update.
Using the enablement pack would probably bypass the settings because you ran it manually (not tested).

        cheers, Paul

I can confirm that you do not need to release control via InControl to install the Windows 11 23H2 enablement package. My InControl settings had been left on 11 22H2. I also did not need to update the Target Version for Feature Updates on the Group Policy Editor (it was still set to 22H2). The enablement package installed very quickly and easily.

It may not have been necessary, but afterward, I used InControl to release control, change the version/release to 11 23H2, and then take control again. I then changed the Target Version for Feature Updates on the Group Policy Editor to 23H2.

On my Windows 10 PC, I simply changed the InControl setting from10 21H2to10 22H2and was then able to manually install the Windows 10 22H2 enablement package.

So changing the setting to11 23H2should allow you to manually install the Windows 11 23H2 enablement package without having to wait for Windows update to offer to install it or, even worse, pressing the Check for updates button which “might” also download/install some unwanted updates.

Interesting, my Dell XPS8940 desktop gets the following message when attempting to do the update. I’ve been applying all security patches when its been safe. Apparently this upgrade doesn’t apply to my computer?

Doesn’t look like 24H2 will be an enablement package, does it?  I tried to use the 22H2 Features on Demand ISO and it’s incompatible.

    • #2701153

How long does it take to install the update?

    • #2701160

Nevermind-just installed the enablement package and it was quick! Like a regular update, it didn’t take long and everything is okay! 🙂

Ya know we should have enablement packages for every future feature update for windows so it’s easier and less stressful for us users. :3

It’s not quite the magic it seems. Here is a description that should explain how it works.

Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 share the same core operating system and system files. New features in version 23H2 are already present in version 22H2 but are inactive. An “enablement package” can be installed to activate these features, allowing devices to transition from version 22H2 to version 23H2 with one restart. Devices receiving updates from Windows Update or WSUS will automatically get the enablement package when updating to version 23H2

The way I read it, you need an OS that is the same core OS as the ‘upgrade’ and the disabled features need to be have downloaded previously. ‘Smoke and mirrors’, but better than a full upgrade for the sake adding a few features.

and the disabled features need to be have downloaded previously.

Nothing has to be downloaded. The inactive functions are part of the OS installed.

Moot point.  They do not need to be downloaded separately, but the components need to have been previously downloaded inside another KB update or they would not be there to switch on.
