I just set up new system, Compac Athlon 1.1 with 56k modem.
The internet conn is at 24k. How do I optimize the modem? I’ve gone to the port property boxes and set at 57.6k, what else can cause this?

      A couple of suggestions.
Does your ISP have separate phone numbers for 56K & 33.3 K modems? Recently changed my default dial up number and doubled my connection speed.
Is this an internal or external modem? (internal I assume). If it is an internal, it MAY be one of the cotrollerless Winmodem types. Some of these are just plain junk, but are included in the systems to cut costs. If it is one of these types, you won’t see a Com3 port in device manager. You will, however, see two entries for the modem – one for the modem itself and another for the software controller.
If this is the case, buy yourself a decent 56K modem from 3Com (but NOT a Winmodem).
      Hope this helps.

Along the same line a Zeus (Jim’s) post….

56k modems are dependent upon a digital to digital connection being made. As noted already, Windmodems are usually garbage, but I’ve had one working well for some time (a USR 5690).

Noise in the phone line, whether you can hear it or not, is usually a large part of the problem. You can purchase filters that go on your phone line, to start with. And I make the phone company come out and test the lines thoroughly. The key there is the tech that you get – I had to call three times on the same issue and it turned out that some shade-tree fool (whistling) had pinched a wire in the phone jack. And not even the one that the modem used.

So the moral is – before you replace hardware, check your phone lines thoroughly. Make sure you have the latest software drivers for the modem. And if you can, take the PC to a different location and try dialing out from there, to see if you get the same results.

      Good luck!!

I have a Dell 4100, PIII 933, 256 mb ram, Win ME, US Robotics 56K modem with telephony. If the other posts do not solve your dilema, here’s another possibility. I had the same thing happen to me. In my case 31,200k was as fast as I could get. This past weekend I got my living room (in the United States) properly grounded. I was using a ‘dummy’ plug as my house is 60 years old and had no three plug outlets. Since then, my connections to Juno, Netzero, and Dellnet MSN come in at 50,666K and, 49K plus, etc. Maybe my system or modem have something that checks fluctuating currents. Anyway I am pleased with the results. Hope your solution is easier/swifter.

Who is your ISP? Some just don’t have enough severs to handle the traffic.
