It sure reads like you can Delete this Folder’s Contents – BUT a little disconcerting that Disk Cleanup pays no attention to this much Temp excess. I even have 555 MB of Temp Files that Disk/System Cleanup repeatedly fails to Remove although box Chk’d – but no biggie Vs 27 GB.

Will appreciate a confirmation that RUN — %temp%– Results (~admin\AppData\Local\Temp) can be Deleted.

I just noted that when I go to Appdata/Local, and select the Temp folder properties – Windows gives me the size of the Local folder instead. – about 27 Gb. If I open the Temp folder and select all the files in it, properties reveals them to occupy only 500 Mb. Go figure.

        Hi CraigS26 / Zig:

If I run a Custom Clean with CCleaner Free and click the blue Analyze button while System – Temporary Files is enabled it often finds 100’s of MBs of files to clean on my Win Pro machine. When I double-click System – Temporary Files in the summary to preview the files that are going to be cleaned (i.e., before I click “Run Cleaner”) and sort by file size I can see the majority of the larger files are located in C:\Users\<myusername>\AppData\Local\Temp, and most of those temp files appear to be created by my MS Outlook 2019 email client.

I run CCleaner Free about once a week and deleting those System – Temporary Files in C:\Users\<myusername>\AppData\Local\Temp has never caused a problem. Note that I’m fairly cautious about what I allow CCleaner to clean (for example, I don’t let it clean anything in my default Firefox browser) and as a general rule I don’t use the registry cleaner unless remnants of an uninstalled programs are causing problems.

I prefer to use the Portable build of CCleaner Free instead of installing the program on my hard drive. I download the ccsetup5xx.zip file from https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds, unzip to any location (I unzip in a folder called CCCleaner on a removable USB stick), and then double-click the appropriate executable (CCleaner.exe for a 32-bit OS, CCleaner64.exe for a 64-bit OS) to run. Any configuration changes will be saved in a file called ccleaner.ini and whenever I unzip a new version of CCleaner I copy over my old ccleaner.ini file to retain my settings.

Cleanmgr has been “depreciated” – maybe try storage (type it in the search box) – it might indicate the nature of the files if nothing else.

      Alternatively in a command prompt

      dir %temp% /o-s /s /p

will trawl through temp a page at a time listing files and folders largest first (then recursing down the file tree), which might illuminate the type of files and thus the cause.

So What do you plan to do with the 27 GB Temp Files? ……..And, Try Rt Clk / Properties again (took a min to see results) …. Mine showed 29 GB

Run portable TreeSize, WizTree.. to check the contains of the temp folder.

      • #2436219

        SpaceSniffer shows 511 Mb.

I reran the Properties of AppData/Local/Temp, and it gave me a similar size. When I ran it earlier, it indicated the folder being examined was Local, thus the above post.

Run portable TreeSize, WizTree.. to check the contains of the temp folder.

That’s the easy part; RUN – %temp% – takes you straight there.

Here’s an Imgur jpg of the Types of 17,089 Files in this Temp Folder; Most are just character Strings with some reflecting an App name like 7z or Mozilla. OK to Delete is just presumed / wished-for Because they’re in a Folder named – TEMP – You’ll see a – 289 MB – Rescue.ISO – as #1 Listing in 2nd Imgur, and I’d logically leave that …..

      Sizes I’m seeing:

      AppData\Local\Temp = 56 KB  Total

      C:\Windows\Temp = 374 KB  Total

Computer has been turned on since 11:00 AM this morning and has been online since 11:35 AM.  How is this possible?  I’m using Windows 7 on a 10 year old computer with 4 Gigs of RAM and a 2 TB HDD.

A contributor in MS Answers said “No Problem” deleting, and with Macrium ready, I did. Only about 5 items remain per “in use” now by an app, and he predicted that. So far, all OK………

The 555 MB in Disk Cleanup that — wouldn’t disappear —  is Gone. Zig’s 500 MB may have been the same type disparity in one spot’s Amount Vs larger in another.  &, Many of these Temp Folders had Large amounts of Files in them, which is Why you’d never think 17,089 Files were involved.

So, short version . . . is it safe to manually go in and delete all the contents of the various temp folders?

      • #2437176

Yep. File Explorer will not delete anything that is in use.

      Me, again:

Just to make sure I wasn’t crazy before, I again went to Users, selected my name, clicked on AppData, selected Local, then right-clicked on Temp and selected Properties Screenshot-2022-04-05-090922

Here’s a screenshot of what I got, but note the folder selected at the top.

        Hi Zig:

Your image in post # 2437110 looks like you checked the size of C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local, not the Temp subdirectory at C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\Temp.

I cleaned my temp folders with CCleaner today and then checked my folder sizes. C:\Users\<myusername>\AppData\Local was 1.83 GB while C:\Users\<myusername>\AppData\Local\Temp still had ~ 147 MB of data.

        Win-10-Pro-v21H2-AppData_Local_Temp-Folder-after-CCleaner-Clean-of-Temp-Files-05-Apr-2022

I browsed inside C:\Users\<myusername>\AppData\Local\Temp and all the remaining files had a Date Modified of 04-Apr-2022 or 05-Apr-2022, so it’s normal that these files would not be cleaned today because my CCleaner setting at Options | Advanced | Only Delete Files in Windows Temp Folders Older Than 24 Hours is ENABLED.
