What is your best guess for the release of 22H2 for Windows 10? Have used “In Control” software, as mentioned recently by Susan Bradley, to hold off the update til I get an “all clear” form her.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerNovember 1, 2022 at 4:27 pm #2494170I “pruned” (dism /online /cleanup-image /resetbase) and something by way of an error message popped up at the subsequent shutdown but whatever it was seems to have left no event log or lasting effect.. it seems fine, but then I don’t do anything complicated like printing..
I guess what you mean was does it clean up the component store? That should happen on its own (part of scheduled maintenance) in its own time.
With 21H1 I used /StartComponentCleanup in place of /resetbase to start it as the machine was noticeably clunky and /AnalyzeComponentStore indicated there was some rubbish, but either way a subsequent (command prompt) defragment was required to get the SSD running right which indicates with a really only, clunky BIOS based RAID the positioning of file data on the drive left after an update could be improved on.. even though technically the effect there should be negligible.. so if you really need to you can make it sort its mess out to whatever level you need..
As to the end result, mine didn’t go through the “out of box experience” which thus means the various privacy settings and the like that process configures remained unchanged, whereas if you ran an in place repair, I would expect that process to end with that to ensure the settings were good as Windows setup has little information as to why you might choose to install the update that way.. perhaps someone else who’s done that can confirm?

a.) ?Does the upgrade preform the same actions as an in-place reinstall??
No, per statements from Susan, PKCano, and other MVPs/Managers in various threads here on AskWoody, the Feature Update uses an enablement package that simply enables features within the OS that have thus far been dormant within the base code of the OS.
b.) If so, does it prune the WinSxS folder contents??
Since the Feature Update uses an enablement package, the answer is most likely “No” to your question. If I’m not mistaken, I believe that the care and maintenance of the WinSxS folder is accomplished by Windows’ own Disk Cleanup tool run with elevated privileges (“Run as Administrator”). This tool can be found in the Start Menu under the “Windows Administrative Tools” listing with the yellow colored folder icon next to it. When you see the listing for Disk Cleanup, right click on it and hover the mouse over the option labeled “More” and then click on “Run as administrator” in the resulting menu. Once you launch Disk Cleanup, it will see just what is available to be “cleaned up” and will present you with a box listing several items. Many will have a check mark next to them and some won’t. The item you’re looking for should be one of the first two items listed, and it should say something like “Windows Update Cleanup”. It should have a check mark next to it also.
For the MVPs and/or Managers here: If Disk Cleanup doesn’t perform WinSxS folder maintenance by selecting the “Windows Update Cleanup” option when it appears in the list of things to clean, please let me know so I can stop being under the wrong impression and so I can also stop giving out wrong information.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 2, 2022 at 8:06 am #2494379apparently cleanmgr has been “depreciated” by Microsoft. Myself I find “storage” (the replacement) to actually be too ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater, whilst leaving the silt in the bottom of the tub.. If you know what you need to do its better to do it yourself.
If you really wanted to thin the rubbish it would be nice to have a way of safely clearing the source files for the built in apps after you tear them out of the active install (and thus WinSXS) with DISM, but there isn’t a way I have been able to find- probably as there is significant component reuse between them (which is why removing Edge doesn’t go well, I suspect.)
For example I still have a cached installer for VC_redist.x86.exe in a folder under C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\ from 2019 (first install, think it came with an old office product..) – long since removed and superseded. It’s that sort of junk which is hard to get rid of as you can never be sure why its not been removed.. which is why I follow Sues advice re media as it It’s not a 5 minute fix might for a problem I might as will spend the next 10 minutes backing up (not much at all local) and flatten it and let Windows setup do its thing.. I have a backup of drivers (pnputil) and as my machine is old and thus completely whql..

AskWoody_MVPNovember 2, 2022 at 12:47 pm #2494455That’s Windows 11 screenshot. What with numerous changes, Microsoft movement may hold true in Windows 10, as well. Many of the changes seem to run in parallel.
