Feature Update KB5003173 (small download) far quicker than a CU.
On initial quick scan, 1st checked Group Policy prior to connecting online.

    GP Changes:
Data Collection and Preview Builds – Telemetry – set to enabled.
App Privacy – All set to enabled.
    New GP Setting:
News and Interests – settings enable/disable.

    Task Scheduler: no changes here.

    Services: nominal

    3rd Party O&O Shutup 10 Changes
Cloud Search – re-enabled (nothing new there, as with CU’s)
    Disable Application Telemetry – enabled

Feel free to add noticed changes as a handy checklist 😉

I am not seeing changes in the GP settings that I had made.
Some of the GP settings I would like to have set concerning telemetry and cloud content were restricted to Enterprise and Education only, according to the settings boxes. These I did not try to use because I figured they would be ignored or reset anyway. See screenshot (Data Collection and Preview Builds) for example.

The settings I turned off by way of the Settings Apps have not been changed as far as I can tell at this point.

System protection was not turned off for a change.

The UWP Apps and ChrEdge that I removed from my test VM were not reinstalled.

        CraigS26,

Glad to hear it went so well.  Would you please explain the meaning of TRV as I’m not as advanced as the others here.

        Thanks

Read through AKB2000016 Guide to Windows Update Settings for Win10. It will explain a lot about TargetReleaseVersion (TRV) and other settings to help control Windows Update.

Thanks PK.  I had booked marked that information earlier and have used it for all my family’s PC’s.  I guess I just didn’t connect TRV with Targeted Release Version.  I guess it was just the issue I had with unfamiliar acronyms.

      1. Is there a new Start Menu?
      2. Is there a new system font –Segoe UI Variable?
      3. Is there a new option under the Power menu on the Start menu to restart apps after signing in when you reboot your device?
      4. Are the items, columns, and rows in File Explorer spaced out more (to allow for better use with Touch Screens), but which you can set for Desktop mode as well?
      5. Is there a new option to the Settings app that will allow you to turn off the content adaptive brightness control (CABC) feature?

These were mentioned in Bleeping Computer but it wasn’t clear there as to whether these were for 21H1 or for 21H2.

Here is what’s new in 21H1 doesn’t say anything about New GP Setting: News and Interests – settings enable/disable, but apparently it’s in 21H1 (see Microfix’s #2365582), so that’s why I asked in #2365629 about those other features mentioned in Bleeping Computer.

          • #2365806

The article in Neowin linked to by you and Alex above you was written on April 4th, therefore it could be based upon a beta/Insider preview build that hadn’t yet had the News and Interests feature incorporated into the build.

          • #2365811

It’s in all supported Windows 10 not just 21h1 – it was included in the May updates.

Wow! Thanks for the info, I did not know that.  😳

That explains why the articles about 21H1 in Neowin and Windows Central made no mention of the feature at all.

      My experience was very different.

I have an Intel NUC8i3BEH with a 500gb Samsung 970 pro m.2 drive and 16gb RAM. My monitor is a 4K Samsung U32R592C. My internet connection is 100mb/s.

I like the NUC – my first computer with Win 10; I use it for “experimenting”. The six other computers I have, which I use for “work”, are all still running Win7 pro updated using the wonderful “Bypass”.

I was running a single retail license of 20H2 with a few customizations, most noticeably of which is “Classic Shell”, which gives the machine the Windows 98 look that all of mine have. It includes a customized “Start” button.
      🙂

      On to the update …

On 19 May or whenever it was that 21H1 was released, against all computer common sense, I decided to get it. It didn’t show up on WU, so I went to the page M$ set up and downloaded Windows10Upgrade9252.exe (6075kb). The download, of course, was done in a flash, but then the fun started.

After clicking “Install”, the entire process took over an hour – closer to 90 minutes! I have no idea why. At some points, each additional percentage (e.g. from 74% complete to 75%) took 4-6 minutes. I really thought there was something wrong, but at 89% the screen flashed and I was told the update would now restart my machine (several times), and I should sit back and relax. Unfortunately, I had a cardiology appointment (no joke), so I had a hard time relaxing, but the update, and the three or four restarts got done in time.

I already had my jacket on when 21H1 was up and running, and I immediately saw the colors on the monitor were off. However, I was off to the cardiologist’s, and fixing things would have to wait.

When I finally got to looking at things, I found the following: almost everything was as it had been, but the driver for my monitor was gone (device manager showed a pnp device), and my external USB 3.0 HDD was completely gone from the system – Disk Management didn’t even see it.

In the end, it took about an hour to get the machine the way I wanted it, but now things seem to be OK.

I have no idea why the process went so slowly (the computer is reasonably fast) or why my hardware got messed up. Fortunately, I have a bit of computer experience and pretty much knew how to fix things.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that my Win 10 is a German version, but I run it in English.

Also, I’ve attached an image of my desktop.NUCdesktop

I went to the page M$ set up and downloaded Windows10Upgrade9252.exe (6075kb)

If you were running 20H2 you should have download KB5000736 (110KB) that takes a couple of minutes to install.
Or, set TVR / registry entry to 21H1.

Updated an XPS8900 with TRV method for the heck of it. Took all of 2 minutes with a reboot. No changes to O&O settings or any of my tweaks that I’ve noticed. Only 2 things I noticed was File Explorer reverted to Quick Access rather than This PC and the check for updates afterwards too almost an hour. No News and Interests showed up either 🙂
