20H2 and Adobe Flash Player

I am Win10/Pro.  I have just moved from  1909 to 20H2 by changing TRV to 20H2.   It took about 2 hours from start to finish.  This feature update sent the Adobe Flash Player security update (2020-10) KB4580325 and the Update for Removal of Adobe Flash Player KB4577586 to the WU queue, both of which I have hidden.  Evidently, WU doesn’t know that they were already installed under version 1909.  Do they need to be installed AGAIN?   (If not I will keep them hidden and hope they eventually go away).

When I went from 1909 to 20H2 recently, it reinstalled a lot of things that I had previously uninstalled, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if it reinstalled Adobe Flash Player for you. I can’t remember for sure, but I’m pretty sure that it did the same for me too, as I have both of those exact updates listed as installing on the day I went from 1909 to 20H2.

I recommend that you open the classic Control Panel (search for Control Panel) and see if Flash Player is listed there. If it is, then you have it and need to run the removal patch again. If it isn’t, then check the following locations:

C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash
%appdata%\Adobe\Flash Player
%appdata%\Macromedia\Flash Player

If any of them exist, then you need to run the removal patch again also. If not, then it sounds like you’re all clear.

Yes, you are right. Everything FLASH is back with 20H2!!

I’ll have to go through the whole routine of removing FLASH again. UGH!!

The February 2021 cumulative update removes Flash.

Well, when I updated to 20H2 yesterday, Flash was back. And at the same time, the WU queue sent two updates to remove it — KB4580325 (2020-10) and KB4577586 (2021-01)!!

Personally, I think that if was gone in the previous version (1909) because I had removed it then (more than a year ago) , 20H2 should have left it that way, instead of putting it back on and sending me updates to remove it.

especially when installing new Win10 feature upgrades or feature updates (ex. from 1909 to 2004/20H2) which would “restore” flash and you needed the 20H2 versions of KB4580325 and KB4577586 to remove flash again.

Well, we’ll see what happens with my other laptop, which is on Version 1909 (like the other laptop was) and will be moved to 20H2 today by changing TRV to 20H2 — like it was done with the the first laptop yesterday.

whether upgrading from 1909 to 20H2 using either Windows Update or the 20H2 ISO install media, you will need to install the 20H2 versions of KB4580325 (if applicable) and then KB4577586 to remove flash. the revised or updated 20H2 install ESD/ISO images that MCT recently downloads (v19042.631) has KB4580325 integrated, and so KB4577586 for 20H2 is still needed to get rid of flash.

I know for sure the upcoming 21H1 release is “flash free” (does not even come with it) because I did a clean install of 21H1 preview release from the 19043.867 ISO image on a test PC and found no traces of it.

Did you mean Download the Latest Version of LCDS (microsoftemail.com) LCDS rather than LCDC?  Sorry not understanding what you mean by LCDC?

I understand that KB4577586 gets rid of the C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash and C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash files & folders, which 20H2 has put back on my system. And, it also gets rid of Control Panel > All Control Items > Flash Player (32-bit).

What does KB4580325 do? How do I determine if it’s applicable?

That’s a security update for flash.

Two days ago, I changed TRV from 1909 to 20H2 on both of my Win10/Pro laptops and I ensured that GP=2 (notify download/install). 20H2 installed in 1.5 hours on one laptop and 1 hr on the other. Immediately after the conversion, wushowhide revealed lots of patches waiting in the WU queue. There was a KB .NET CU, a KB microcode, a KB “health” patch that converts to an app, two Adobe Flash Player security and/or removal patches, a myriad of Intel drivers (even though GP instructs WU to ignore drivers) and even an out-of-date firmware/BIOS. I quickly hid them all and am leaving the microcode, the “health” patch, the Intel drivers, and the out-of-date firmware hidden. I unhid and installed the .NET CU.

Recent news about the Adobe Flash Player patches: After I unhid and installed 20H2 KB4577586 Update for Removal of Adobe Flash Player last night, this morning 20H2 KB4580325 Security Update for Adobe Flash Player is no longer in wushowhide. It happened on both of my Win10/Pro 20H2 laptops.

and that should be the expected behavior after upgrading from 1909 to 20H2.

the KB4580325 and KB4577586 patches for 1909 are not saved when upgrading to 20H2 and thus the 20H2 versions of the KB4580325 and KB4577586 patches have to be installed again

But, I am saying here that KB4580325 disappeared from wushowhide after I unhid and installed KB4577586, so apparently only the latter is required/necessary.

I would unhide and install the Adobe patches. You do NOT want Flash installed.

indeed Paul.

even with revised or updated 20H2 ESD/ISO install media image files (like with build 19042.631 or higher), the KB4577586 update for 20H2 is still needed to remove the embedded activex edition of adobe flash (KB4577586 will NOT remove the NPAPI and PPAPI versions of flash as those versions should be removed separately thru flash uninstallers from adobe)

but that will all be a moot point since MS announced that the KB4577586 update will be included in the upcoming late June 2021 & July 2021 cumulative updates for Win8.x & Win10:

To help keep our customers secure, Microsoft will remove the Flash component from Windows through the KB4577586 “Update for Removal of Adobe Flash Player”.

-Starting in June 2021, the KB4577586 “Update for Removal of Adobe Flash Player” will be included in the Preview Update for Windows 10, version 1809 and above platforms. It will also be included in every subsequent Latest Cumulative Update.

-As of July 2021, the KB4577586 “Update for Removal of Adobe Flash Player” will be included in the Latest Cumulative Update for Windows 10, versions 1607 and Windows 10, version 1507. The KB will also be included in the Monthly Rollup and the Security Only Update for Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Embedded 8 Standard.

Additionally, please note that when you update to Windows 10, version 21H1 or later, Flash will be removed.
