    The MS website here doesn’t include Windows 98 as one of the supported operating systems for the Office 2007 file converter. But does anyone know whether it actually works with Windows 98?

      I don’t know for certain but I doubt it. The file converter uses parts of the Office 2007 engine and Office 2007 does *not* run on Windows 98.

        Thanks for the reply. That was what I feared, but I wasn’t sure if what the MS website said was just because they no longer support Windows 98 generally.

          Hi Ian,

          Sorry for not posting this sooner – had to track down where I saw this question before ….

          Viewing New MS Word 2007 File Formats using Windows 98 on http://LockerGnome.Com[/url%5D. At the end of the thread, the suggestion was to load Office 2003 converter then Office 2007 convert on top. Even the writer doesn’t believe that would work.

          To the best of my knowledge, the last known Office File Converter Pack that works on W98/W98 SE was for Office 2003.

          My solution, although proven NOT to be perfect, was to download OpenOffice.org 2. The Microsoft Windows System Requirements for OpenOffice.org 2 are:

          • Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 or higher), Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista (enhanced Vista integration from version 2.2)
          • 128 Mbytes RAM
          • At least 800 Mbytes available disk space for a default install (including a JRE) via download. After installation and deletion of temporary installation files, OpenOffice.org will use approximately 440 Mbytes disk space.
          • 800 x 600 or higher resolution with at least 256 colours.

            Yes, I had discovered that you could use Open Office, but in my experience, even on a fairly simple document, it didn’t seem to preserve all the layout of the Word 2007 document.

            The issue arises with one of the computers in our church office and I think we have concluded that it’s high time it was updated with something running a slightly more recent OS than Windows 98.

              The simplest solution would be to have the originator save the file in 97-2003 format, but presumably that option isn’t available.

              Indeed that is a good solution, but you can’t guarantee that everyone who sends you stuff will do that.

              It’s time for this particular person to have a newer PC, I think.

              Newer machine is a useful way to put it, because Office 2007 will run very smoothly on an XP machine in my experience, and XP machines require a lot less computing power and expense. Any person or organization on a limited budget might easily acquire one second-hand or as a donation.
