I have an XP machine (all updates installed) with both Office 2003 and Office 2007 installed. 2003 was installed first and has been running fine for years. I have two issues

Whenever I start 2003 (after 2007 has been used) and vice versa, I get an installation process. Is this normal

More importantly, I am getting constant crashes in 2007 (Access only, other Office apps seem fine) to the point where it is unworkable. This happens if I am using an old 2003 database (2000 file format), a db converted from 2003 to 2007 or a db created in 2007. The only issue I had on install was an error where it could not install a font but I could never find out which font and have followed all the net solutions to try to fix that issue (which may be unrelated)

    Any suggestions

    TIA
    Steve

Although it should be possible to install multiple versions of Office on one PC, and several Loungers have done it with success, I always avoid doing so. If I needed to test in multiple versions of Office, I’d set up (or find) a separate PC for each version.

If your databases crash in Access 2007 and if you had a problem while installing, it might be a good idea to uninstall Office 2007 (or Access 2007) completely and remove all traces from the registry, then reinstall.

I’ve run multiple versions of Access on same machine for years, although I have not yet had the “privilege” of trying it with Access2007. There are a few articles in the MSKB that talk about this, such as #870961 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870961/en-us%5B/url%5D ), but it only deals with A2003 and before. But maybe if you kept looking there you might find something.

I am running Access 2003 and 2007 on the same PC. I do get the installation process the first time only when I run 2003 after 2007 (or vice-versa), but only the once.

I have never had 2007 crash on my PC – are you running 2003 and 2007 at the same time ? Have you tried repairing the 2007 installation ?

Dunno whether this will help with 2007 and 2003 co-existing, but it documents my experience with 2003 co-existing with 97

That process works for A97, but does not work for the A2003/A2007 combination

Found this information, but it does not offer a solution:
        http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928091%5B/url%5D

        Windows Installer messages in Access
On a computer that has multiple versions of Access installed, the Windows Installer may start when you start Microsoft Office Access 2003 or Microsoft Office Access 2007. And, a “preparing to install” message or a “configuring” message may be displayed. You receive these messages before Access starts.

The Windows Installer repair operation registers Access 2003 every time that you start Access 2003 after you use Access 2007. Similarly, the Windows Installer repair operation registers Access 2007 every time that you start Access 2007 after you use an earlier version of Access. Access 2000 and Access 2002 do not initiate a repair operation after you use a later version of Access. If the version of Access that you start is the same as the version of Access that you previously used, the Windows Installer repair operation does not occur.

A further thought. I don’t know whether this would be applicable to your particular setup, but FWIW you could think about using VMWare Server (at vmware.com) to create a virtual PC, and run Office 2003 on your normal Pc, and Office 2007 on your virtual PC. It’s free for personal use.

Steve, it’s possible that you might fix the 2007 crash issue by installing SP1 of Office 2007 if you haven’t already done so. Also note that there is a known but undocumented problem with nested subforms and right-clicking that will cause Access 2007 to simply vanish on you. I expect there will be some info on that problem from MS in the not too distant future – and hopefully a hotfix…..
