Windows Defender ATP extends support to include down-level operating systems, providing advanced attack detection and investigation capabilities on supported Windows versions.

To onboard down-level Windows client endpoints to Windows Defender ATP, you’ll need to:
– Configure and update System Center Endpoint Protection clients.
– Install and configure Microsoft Monitoring Agent (MMA) to report sensor data to Windows Defender ATP as instructed below.

Tip
After onboarding the machine, you can choose to run a detection test to verify that it is properly onboarded to the service. For more information, see Run a detection test on a newly onboarded Windows Defender ATP endpoint.

Not sure, I like the sound of this…

When a Windows 10 computer user catches a virus, or a malware or the credentials get compromised, Windows Defender ATP will suspend the user account and the devices network access.

Not sure, I like that either… I foresee work stations mysteriously “locked” out?

Absoutely don’t like either of those.  (Me neither.)

Questions:  what is the declared end-of-life date for Microsoft Security Essentials in Win7?  Is Defender ATP in Win7 supposed to be better than MSE in Win7 (on its own)?  What is the declared end-of-life date for Defender ATP in Win7?

Conclusion: I’m not touching it even with the proverbial barge-pole.

Win7 SP1 Pro 64-bit, MSE, Group B up to Dec 2017, now Group W (and moving to Linux Mint).

So I was wrong about ATP for Windows Defender costing $7 per user per month. It would be $14 per user per month for the necessary Enterprise E5 license:

For larger companies, the E5 version of Windows 10 Enterprise is the more compelling offer as it includes Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection that will help mitigate attacks on a corporate network and combat the rising threat of ransomware. As for a price, Microsoft is setting a $14 estimated retail price point for E5 but the price could vary by Cloud Service Provider depending on features included with the SKU.

I suppose the added security to be offered by Microsoft to Win7/8.1 Enterprise and Pro version Users is a thing to get excited about. So, lets look at this a little closer.

Unless you are already paying for LTSB, Win7 reaches EOL in 1 1/2 years (18 months). This “Service” that MS is offering is another way to monetize older Windows. AND, another way to hook owners of older versions into upgrading to Win10 by EOL. MS ID, login to the services, monitor (it has to collect information to perform the service) your PC. And this time the information goes to a “Partner” (Cloud Solution Provider) – and you are paying for the collection of data. Supposedly, MS is also making this available with an E3 Enterprise License to businesses that don’t have volume licensing.

And how about Home Users? Has MS said they can purchase this “service”?
With the enhanced Defender integrated into older versions of Windows, when will Windows stop supporting your third-party security solution(s)? Is this a way to get the public to abandon Win7, instead of continuing to use it with third-party protection after EOL?
