    In the attached WB you will discover a chart. The target range is plotted as a line chart to indicate a target sale requirement.
    My 2 Q’s are:
    1. If I use the Vary color by point option on the line, it seems like I cannot format the weight thicker. I would like to keep the varying colour, but I do want the target line to be thicker. Is there a way to have both slices of the cake?
    2. Is there any way to extend the line to the edges of the chart plot area. It does awkward if it just stops in the middle of the two columns.

      1) Not as far as I know (I can’t think of a good reason for wanting it- it’s a horizontal line representing a single number)
      2) No.

        In regard to the second, you can use a work around.

        Add a row above the data, below the headings. Then put 5 in cell D2. Also, put 5 in cell D7. Then extend the data source from row 2 to row 7.

        Select your target line, change it to secondary axis, and change the scale to match the same scale as primary axis.

        Then select the X-axis, choose “Format axis”, and in the scale tab, uncheck the box “Value (Y) axis crosses between categories”.

          Thanks. I knew about this one, but I was afraid that Rudi, finicky as he is, would be dissatisfied with the extra space to the left and right of the columns…

          Thanks Shades. Your suggestion is really appreciated and always welcome. I however did think of this too, but shows how well Hans has come to know me, I wanted to know if there was a way to extend the line without customising the worksheet. Sorry that I did not make myself entirely clear in the first place.

          PS: That work around will be handy for many people to come, so always suggest something if you have!

          PPS: Finicky….me?? I would say precise, accurate and perfectionist…..(sounds better…..shhhh!!)

      How about this? I made 4 lines so each can be formatted differently (no vary by point) and used a sec X-axis to extend it

        I studied up that chart, and I notice you used a custom series of source data. I was trying to see what you did, so I deleted one of the lines, and when I clicked ADD, it adds a series, but it does not give me a X and Y values text box. All I get is a Name and Values text box??? How did you construct each induvidual series??

        I dunno how you do it!!

          Select one of the other segment series to see how it is defined.

            I did.

            When I select one of the segments, the options for an X and Y values textbox comes up where the details can be specified. So when I want to create a new segment, I choose ADD, which creates a new series, but it only provides the Name and one values textbox in the dialog. Unless I am missing a simple setting or step, I cannot seem to get the X/Y values text boxes to define the segment!

              The easiest way to add the series again is:
              – Select E3:F4.
              – Drag this range by its edge and drop it onto the chart.
              – Tick the check box ‘Categories (X Labels) in First Column’.
              – Click OK.

              Are you regretting the fact that you told me about two years back that I can ask as many Q’s as I want! yep Straight from the horses mouth…honest truth. I now am living up to this and I ask Q’s not just for me…but for ALLLLLLL other loungers on the site! grin

          Another option would be to make the range all the points for the target, make it a wide line, just and manually change the color of each segment.
