    Please tell me the functional purpose of the 2 icons.

      Those look like a customised toolbar in my experience with Word 2007 so I would surmise that the buttons have been placed there by a developer of one of your templates or addins. If this is the case then the functionality of the button may actually have nothing to do with the functionality that Microsoft intended when they created the icons.

      The first icon is normally associated with “Quick Styles” but could be something different on your PC. It shows a dropdown WYSIWYG view of some common styles.
      The second icon is normally associated with “Phonetic Guide…” but again could be different on your PC. This looks to provide a superscript notation that helps chinese and japanese readers to correctly pronounce written characters.

      I found these icons by going into Start Button > Word Options > Customize and then setting Choose commands from to All Commands and then eyeballing the massive list underneath.

        Hi Andrew,
        Thanks for taking valuable time to “eyeball” the All Commands. I did it but failed. It’s the plain Mini Toolbar eagerly popped up whenever a text string is selected. All your “surmise” is correct.
        BTW, what’s the phonetic guide? In accordance with http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP052510511033.aspx, it’s primarily used for Chinese, Japanese and Korean. But what’re the base text and Ruby text, respectively?

          I had no idea either so I looked it up too. I found a good description on wikipedia which explained that it was a way of indicating how a glyph is pronounced. This can be necessary when the character is uncommon (in alphabets with hundreds of characters) or the character can have different meanings depending on the pronunciation. The Ruby (Rubi) character is what shows the correct pronunciation. It appears not to be of use with english speakers so I don’t think it is of use to me but it may be useful for multi-lingual users in far off places like Singapore and Hong Kong like yourself.

          I first looked in the online help which proved to be dead end – sometimes I wonder if the technical writers at MS are proud of their work with Word.

          I have never paid attention to the popup before so that explains why I have not noticed those buttons before. The fact that it doesn’t appear for half a second means my eyes have lost interest on the selection as I am searching desperately on the new ribbon for the old commands I remember from the earlier versions of Word.

            Neither do I. Before reading your suggested Wikipedia source, I have never heard about Ruby characters. Thanks for the interesting information.
