• 2 Figure captions for one picture

    I need to have the right and left Y-axes aligned on a page in Word when I have 2 figures on 1 page. Because some right Y-axes have labels and some do not, the pictures do not import at the same size and it takes a bunch of tweaking to get the Y-axes aligned. Figure Test.doc is an example of this problem.

    It’s very easy to do in the originating program (Grapher – HIGHLY recommended to all). Therefore, I would like to import a 2 panel graph into Word and apply a different Figure Caption for each panel. The Figure Captions should be consecutively numbered and adjust correctly if preceding figures are deleted/added so everything is correct when I generate a TOC. An example of a 2 figure jpg is attached.

    Is there an easy way to do this, or is the tweaking the best way?

      Tweaking may be your only option. I don’t believe that there is an easy way to do this unless you go to a single caption but sub-label the sub-charts. For example, in your charting program, label the top one A and the bottom on B. Then put a single caption in Word and cross-reference to Figure 9A or Figure 9B.

      Other possibilities are:

        [*]If you put a second caption into a floating text box then you could possibly get it going but a list of figures won’t find the floating captions.
        [*]Position the graphic as a floating object under the text and then use paragraph space before on the captions to position them correctly overlying the graphic. I don’t recommend this one either as I dislike floating graphics in general.

        You could convert the text box to a frame. Like text boxes, frames can be set via menus to a particular horizontal and vertical position. Be sure that the anchor for the top figure is higher on the page than the caption for the lower figure. If it is not, the numbering will be out of order. If you are using W2007 and are not sharing the files with those using earlier version, you can use text boxes for this. Unlike earlier versions, the W2007 TOC can see the text in text boxes.

      Would it be it possible, in the originating program, to add a dummy label to the right Y-axis in WHITE font? Seems like then it would select and paste in at the same size, but no text would be visible.

        This turned out to be the simplest option. I added a right y-axis label in white font and then adjusted the left-right location of the label until the entire width of the two graphs were the same. Once imported into Word, the “white label” graph (bottom graph) had to be shifted 0.1″ from left axis to account for the difference in left y-axis tick mark and axis labels width.

      This is purely speculative as I’ve never used Figure Captions in a TOC before but could you put 2 totally blank and transparent gifs (each with a Figure Caption) over the two graphs in the panel? Lock them together and see if the Figure Captions are correctly displayed in the TOC.

      It might work.
