I’m thinking about getting a password manager for my Android smartphone and Windows 10 laptop and syncing them up. I’m stuck between 1Password and NordPass. I haven’t used a password manager before, so I’m curious about your take on which one might be the better choice. And if you know of an even better option, I’d really appreciate your recommendations

1Password has had too many data breaches (1 is too many).

Not tried NordPass, but the data seems to be stored in the cloud. I don’t trust any cloud store – see the 1Password breach link above.

I use KeePass and it stores all data locally. I can then choose where to save my data. Cross device support is via 3rd party apps so you need to know what you are doing.

If you want easy cross device access, try KeePassDX KeePassXC. It uses the same KeePass format but has apps for all devices. And it’s free, just like KeePass! 🙂

Thank you for your reply, you helped me a lot!
So, with KeePassDX, can I sync the data on my laptop with the data on my phone?

Sorry, I meant KeePassXC, not DX.

Yes, but you need to store the database in a location that is accessible on all devices, or send the database via mail etc. This is the downside of not having someone (1Password etc) storing the database for you. Luckly, the KeePass database format is robust and unbreakable in real world use if you use a good password, allowing you to put the database on a cloud drive (OneDrive, GDrive etc) and opening it from each device.

You must backup the database, but in that respect it’s the same as any of your data.

No KeePassXC port for on Android that I can find.

Do you have a KeePass suggestion for Android? I see KeePassDX though it has only 100k downloads; Keepass2Android and KeePassDroid, each with 1M downloads.

And how to know if any of them are secure?

So maybe Google Keep as a stopgap? I’m stymied.

The potential security issue with 1Password was a false alarm as described in this post:
        https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/1password-okta-has-been-breach/#post-2604708

1Password supports Android and Windows. As a cloud-based password manager, passwords are automatically synced between your devices and passwords are automatically backed up. The cost is $36 per year for an individual.

Windows 10 22H2 desktops & laptops on Dell, HP, ASUS; No servers, no domain.

I didn’t know they don’t do an Android version (I don’t use XC).
        On Android I use KeePass2Android.

I (and my whole family) use keepassdroid for years in this way:

I store my keepass db on a Dropbox owned directory on my laptop

Using Dropsync I download the keepass db folder from dropbox on my Android device

On Android I, my wife and my son use keepassdroid (my daugther preferred keepass2android for interface looking better, but the process is the same)

It work fine for us from 2016 and w/o any issue.

        Just a couple of suggestions:

-do not store the DB on external memory (if any) on your android device but use the phone memory, otherwise you could run in some minor issues like file not found after a new update of local file and you have to search again for the db file to open.

-Syncronize the db from Dropbox to Android in download only and manage the DB only on Windows (or the other way around if you like, avoiding to modify the DB on Keepass on PC), this way you cold avoid any problem of inconsistency expecially if you share the db on more then one device.

See the KeePass recommended method of sharing a database.
