• 1909 No Eject option in File Explorer Right-Click Menu

    Hey Y’all,

I was doing some work with USB thumb drives today and I noticed that the short-cut menu (Right-Click) in Windows File Explorer no longer has the Eject option:
    Win1909-No-Eject-on-USB
you now need to use the safely remove media option on the Task bar notifications area.
    Win1909-No-Eject-on-USB-2
Most likely you’ll have to click on the Show Hidden Icons up arrow first.

    HTH 😎

Is quick removal set in the drive properties?

How big is that thumb drive? And what type: USB 2 or USB 3.x?

I have Win10 Pro, 1909, a fresh install today (to a new SSD) on a customer’s system. It has never been online yet, so no updates of any kind.

I just tried a couple of my USB “thumb drives” on it, a 32GB 2.0 and it has the Eject option on the right-click menu.

I tired a 64GB USB 3.x drive, and it has the Eject option.

Quick Removal was the default setting on those two drive’s Policy screens in Device Manager.

And it did not matter if it was plugged into a 2.0 socket, or a 3.x socket.

I also tried a 300GB SATA hard disk in a USB 3.x adapter (the drive slips in to a socket), and it does NOT have the Eject option on the right-click menu. It didn’t matter what speed socket it was plugged into either.

However, Quick Removal was also the auto-set Policy in Device Manager for the device & the 300GB drive combination.

Oh, and I have a remote server at a clients’ office that has a 128GB USB 3.0 thumb drive plugged into a 3.x port, and it has the Eject option on the right-click menu. I just logged into that system to check for that.

So, the Eject option is there for small, “normal’ USB thumb drives, but seems to go away depending on how Windows interprets the attached drive: It seems to know that the thumb drives are ‘small’ (portable?), and a bigger SATA type drive that should not be “Ejected” from the File Manager menu.

So, back to my opening question: How big is your “Macrium Images” device, and how is it attached? Is it a real “thumb drive”, and how big is it? What’s a “NS1066” device?

PS: I, of course have no logical explanation for what Windows is doing, hopefully somebody will chime in with WHY Windows is doing its thing.

      At RetiredGeek:

I just went to “Eject” my USB 3.x adapter with the 300GB SATA drive in it, and…it says it’s a “NS1066” device. This is the device that has NO “Eject” option on the File Manager right-click menu.

So, it seems we both have some device that Windows is seeing as an NS1066 device. Mine came in an “Orico” branded box, is stamped Orico 3.5” SATA HDD docking station on the bottom.

I have noticed, from at least Windows 7, that only certain USB drives have a right-click option to Eject. Others need to be ejected in the Safely Remove Hardware systray, even with Quick Remove set as the default drive option.

In my situation, only small USB drives have the option. Larger external hard drives do not.

        @ Kirsty

        Thanks for verifying my testing.

I wonder what the break-over size is, as that 128GB thumb drive I checked still has the “Eject” option on the File Manager menu.

I wonder if it has to do with the controller and/or how the drive is mounted.  You have a 128GB usb drive that has the eject option.  My 120gb ssd with a sata to usb adapter does not.

However, if I plug the adapter in without the ssd, it still gets mounted and recognized as a usb device, and has the option to eject in the right click menu.

      Hey Y’all,

I did some more testing with interesting results. Yes, the NS1066 device I was using was an Orico device. I also have an iDsonix 3.5/2.5 drive dock that shows up as NS1066.

Further testing on several SanDisk cruiser blade devices revealed that most will have the eject option, however one with a Windows Install image loaded on it will NOT!

There is still ‘Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media’ icon (Windows 10 1903 Pro).
