• 1000 Mbps LAN set up

    I have a home network using a 10/100 Mbps router to share the SBC Yahoo DSL. Two of the PCs on the LAN have 10/100/1000 Mbps capability. What kind of equipment should I use to take the advantage the 1000Mbps capability? The 100 Mbps speed to transfer large video or audio files within the LAN is too slow.

    The cable used to wire the LAN is category 5 cable. Do I need a 10/100/1000 Mbps router or just to use a 10/100/1000 Mbps switch to set up the LAN?

      10/100/1000 Mbps router YES
      And ALL NIC’s MUST be of the 10/100/1000 Mbps type.

      In addition to DaveA’s comment about routers and NIC cards you may also want to consider upgrading your CAT5 cables to CAT5E or CAT6. Check here for more information… or google using the phrase CAT5E or CAT6 definitions.

      You don’t have to upgrade your router, if you’re happy with it. You could install a 10/100/1000 switch. Connect all the fast computers to this switch using cat5e or cat6 cables, and then connect the switch to your router using a cat5 cable.

      This will allow the computers to communicate with each other at gigabit speeds, and to send packets to the DSL link via the slower router.

        Since my house is wired with CAT5 for the network, I need to upgrade the cable to CAT5e or CAT6 first beforedoing anything else. It means climbing to the attic, pulling and dropping the cables and…
