AskWoody LoungerAugust 9, 2017 at 10:41 pm #128728Not quite so black and white “b”:
Trick 1 is about how to get updates when the time comes by running Windows Update manually;
Trick 7 is about deferring updates until new version releases have earned CBB status, or whatever MS is calling it at the time.
There is no contradiction here at all.

AskWoody_MVPAugust 9, 2017 at 9:37 am #128608I don’t think “Start Fresh” is at Settings, Recovery any more. It’s morphed into “Fresh Start” in Windows Defender Security Center: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4012986/windows-defender-track-your-device-performance-health
(Confirmed in the first paragraph at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10startfresh)

I am confused Woody. You had those of us on windows 10 version 1607 hide the updates on Tuesday 8/8/17.
This Infoworld article says we should install Windows 10 1703. What should we really do? Shouldn’t we wait until the August updates for 1703 at least have the issues ironed out.
Do you now want us to install “Creators Update” or what-ever they call the 1703 and then hold off on any updates offered.
I feel I am getting mixed directions. Is there a straight forward or blunt answer? Should we install “Creators Update” for windows home (1703) or should we keep the Windows 10 home people keep 1607 on our computers until you give us the go to install those updates.
I follow your advice, but something is not clear to me.
Thank you very much!

ManagerAugust 9, 2017 at 11:04 am #128631I think Woody is saying it is time to update from 1607 to 1703 Creators Update.
With that said, you can wait till later this month when the DEFCON level is 3 or above to do the actual updating. That will give the current update time to percolate and be sure it isn’t going to cause problems. -

When the DEFCON number at the top of the front page of the website is 3 or above, would be the signal to go ahead and update to 1703. Woody also publishes the instructions at the time.
If you want to read about the DEFCON system, there is a button at the top of the page that links you to the description.

GuestAugust 9, 2017 at 5:13 pm #128684Yes, I’ve been following it for a couple of years now.
So we just skip the 1607 for windows 10 home updates totally, and install the creators update? The Adobe update is for version 1607. What about that?
I received no MS Office 2007 updates so I am good with that. I am aware it’s end of life is October.
I am assuming the MSRT is the same no matter what.

GuestAugust 11, 2017 at 12:06 am #128896I have a Windows 10 Home laptop. I followed the link to your “20 Ways to Hate Windows 10 Less”, specifically the “Keep your drivers” information. Does this information not apply to the Home version? I’m guessing not but asking to make sure. The only thing that was in Device Information Settings was about automatically downloading manufacturers apps and custom icons. I’m embarrassed to ask but is a driver considered a manufacturer’s app?

Windows 10 Home used to have non-WU driver settings (but I haven’t checked them in Creators Update, sorry).
