I have a few updates hidden…
The updates I have not installed are kb3186497 .net framework 4.7. I thought I had read it could be problematic with Windows 7. it is recommended and checked.
Also I had hidden kb4049016 (net framework for nov), when I heard it was pulled.
I just unhid it (clicked restore) and checked for updates and it still is being offered as recommended and checked.
I thought it was pulled????

GuestNovember 1, 2017 at 11:22 am #143094Mr.Brian: I did the “restart” on the computer after I installed the KB3186497 MS .Net Framework update because it did not have its usual “restart now” showing. Well, I did the “restart” as it is supposed to be done from the computer, however the computer did not do its usual gymnastics, so I waited about 2 minutes and did it again. It did not respond again.
So the only thing I can do is to move forward with the instructions. I don’t know what else to do unless there is another “option”. I will try to wait about 10 minutes to see if you may be back again.
I don’t think there is anything else I can do at this point in time other than to move forward with the next instruction (Step 7).
I know you can’t be at the computer every minute….. sometimes it’s like”we don’t have a life of our own anymore”. Thank you if you can provide any other avenue to pursue in this instance, please? I hope I’m not “doing wrong” by forging ahead, however there is only one more step to go.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 1, 2017 at 10:25 am #143083Mr.Brian: I have gotten to STEP 3:
I’ve DL & installed the 17 Important updates as you directed. Computer did the “restart” and all appears to be okay, NOW HOWEVER, I need some guidance with the following step PLEASE:
I am now at “Step 4”.
I did the “Check for updates” and hid the KB3021917. The 3 updates for the .NET Framework are there, all checked, however I unchecked them all for now. It appears that the ONLY one I see that references BOTH MS and .NET Framework 4.7 is KB3186497 (dated 6/27/17), 47.5 MB. I just need to verify that this is the correct one to install. I will wait for a while hoping that you will be back here so I can verify this.
Everything, thus far seems to be going in accordance with your instructions. Only wish to verify .NET Framework update, and I think it’s the one I cited above. I would rather “wait” and verify rather than to DL & install the wrong one. Thank you for your help, guidance and verification with this one.

AskWoody PlusOctober 30, 2017 at 7:09 pm #142167I wanted to wait until DEFCON 3 (or higher) before I used MrBrian’s new instructions to update my Group B computer. I’m pleased to report that all went well! I am one of the many who did not hide any updates in the past, other than Windows 10-related updates. So I wanted to make sure my computer was totally update-to-date prior to installing October’s updates. Before I started, I decided to “unhide” any hidden updates. To my surprise, there were none, even though I had hidden many over the past couple of years (and have the list).
Not 100% sure of using the Windows Update MiniTool (yet), I decided to go through the process of “checking for updates & then hiding unwanted updates” and did so repeatedly 11 times, including the initial check. Each of the subsequent 10 checks took 1 minute each (and hiding took even less time), making the entire process very manageable and not time-consuming.
As a result, I installed the following 5 Important updates and then rebooted:
– Security Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2553338) 32-Bit Edition
– Security Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2837599) 32-Bit Edition
– Security Update for Microsoft Outlook 2010 (KB4011196) 32-Bit Edition
– Security Update for Microsoft Word 2010 (KB3213630) 32-Bit Edition
– Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 – October 2017 (KB890830)After checking for updates again, I installed the following 1 Important update (no need to reboot):
– Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3177467) from 10/11/16
[Note: Servicing stack update for Windows 7 SP1 SP1]Interestingly, this is the same “missing” update that both Elly and fl also found after going through this process.
Afterwards, I compiled a list of all Hidden updates (1 Office 2010 and 47 Windows 7), and then unhid the following:
Optional:
– 2017-10 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7 on Windows 7 (KB4043766)
– Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 for Windows 7 for x64 (KB3186497)Note: I get Recommended Updates as Optional Updates
I bet next month’s process will be quicker, now that all past Previews and Windows Rollups are now hidden . . .
Group B — and the beat [still] goes on
“Thank you” once again to MrBrian, Woody, PKCano, and everyone else who contributes their time and expertise to AskWoody!

AskWoody_MVPOctober 28, 2017 at 2:59 pm #141428From @walker:
@Mr.Brian: I need help because of all of the .Net Framework updates that are “pending”. I have not installed any .NET Framework updates at all. The oldest one here is dated June 27,2017. Here is what I have now:
KB3186497 .Net Framework 47.5 MB OPTIONAL (Italicized) Pub. 6/27/17
KB4043766 .NET Framework 61,6 MB OPTIONAL (Italicized) Pub 10/10/17
KB4042076 PREVIEW of Quality Rollup for .NET OPTIONAL (not italicized) Pub 10/17/17
KB4041083 Security & Quality Rollup for .NET. IMPORTANT (not italicized) Pub 9/12/17
I did not install ANY updates at all for quite a long time, because there were those serious problems with the computer.
******************************************************************************
This one is not relevant to any .NET updates, however it is one that was listed, and just “disappeared”. It appears to be KB4041681 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win7 x64: KB4041681 IMPORTANT 202.4 MB pub 10/10/17
This just occurred over the last 2 days, apparently when I was “unhiding upates”. I have no clue as to the reason this occurred. I noticed that it disappeared from the OPTIONALS.
I have spent so much time trying to get things back to where they should be, and now there are “new” problems. Please, if possible, provide some guidance for this dilemma? I am assuming that the update that just disappeared was due to unhiding one of the updates. I am overwhelmed and exhausted at this point in time.
Any help you could provide would be a “Godsend”. Thank you for all of the help you have previously provided, Mr.Brian.

AskWoody PlusOctober 28, 2017 at 12:56 pm #141390KB3186497 is a Recommended update. If you think you need this update, and it shows up in your Windows Update then go ahead and get it. I personally have not gone past the .Net Framework 3.5.1 and all is fine on my 2013 Win 7, x64 computer. I apply the cumulative .Net updates which include Framework 3.5.1 along with all the others and I still stay at 3.5.1.
This is just my personal experience and your computer system/software may need it.
Hope this helps.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 27, 2017 at 8:12 pm #141157Thank you PCKano but I am still confused, your answer did not really answer my questions…..sorry no disrespect intended!
The thing is I have KB3186497 (Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64) HIDDEN. Should I unhide it?Should I in fact install it after being advised not to? And if I should then do I install that first (where it was released first) and then install KB4043766 (this month’s 2017-10 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7 on Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 for x64)?
When installing updates I usually do it in a certain order and in groups or one update at time as not to overload the process and it take forever. I usually do all the office ones in a group first. Then the MRT update second, the NET rollup third and save the Monthly Quality Rollup (the biggest one) for last. So I just need to know what order to install the NET updates.

AskWoody PlusOctober 27, 2017 at 8:02 pm #141152Last month I was advised to hide and ignore KB3186497 Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64. My PC has NET 4.6.1 installed…..so am I now being advised to install that update? If so should I install that one before installing this month’s 2017-10 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7 on Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB4043766)?
I’m in the same boat as you. I’m running Windows 7 x64 and .NET 4.6.1. I did not install the .NET rollup this month because it’s optional (no security fixes). I plan to install .NET 4.7.1 in few weeks when I upgrade my paint.net program. If you check the comments on this blog entry, you’ll see that there is a dependency issue when installing .NET 4.7 on Windows 7 that is fixed in .NET 4.7.1. Apparently .NET 4.7.1. will be pushed out to Windows Update in a few weeks. You may want to wait until that’s available from Windows Update, which should also be in a few weeks.

ManagerOctober 26, 2017 at 1:02 am #140800From a little research, I have found this, which I hope is of some assistance to you:
The .NET 4.7 Framework installer is KB3186497. The Rollups and security-only patches for .NET 4.7 are updates.
If you install .NET 4.7 on Win7, and you are NOT installing the Security Monthly Quality Rollups (Group A), you will need to download from the Catalog and install manually the D3D Compiler KB4019990 first.
or if you are Group A:
If you follow Group A (Monthly Rollups), the compiler should already be on your machine.
Re KB4043766, there have been several mentions this month, which you may like to read through in these topics:

AskWoody PlusOctober 22, 2017 at 4:47 pm #139963PKCano and ch100 – All seems to be good on my second conversion from Group B to Group A – my wife’s important SOHO Win 7 Pro 64-bit machine.
Once again, however, after all the updates and many reboots, and after I then did the Windows Update Cleanup, the next reboot gave me a screen saying “Configuring Windows updates – 100% complete – Do not turn off your computer,” and this screen stayed there for about 20 minutes! Something about the cleanup triggers this. But all seems well afterwards so far. MAYBE this event is explained lower down on this page here: https://askwoody.com/forums/topic/group-b-win78-1-missing-updates-hiding-rollups-security-only-patches/#post-139441 ?
As with my earlier machine, KB3186497 was nowhere in sight – it was not in any list before, during or after this conversion.
Like last time, the two first Important updates were KB4043766 and KB4041681. This time, however, after those first two, I also got KB3135445 and KB3138612 as Important updates, which I decided to install. (I had hid them many months ago, on this machine only, but unhid them for this conversion.) Those four were all.
Many thanks.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 22, 2017 at 9:51 am #139860Mr.Brian, thank you for the guidance on those updates you recommended unhiding. I have only one “OLD” update that is NOT hidden, that is listed in the “Important” ones. I think that because when it came out, there was never any specific “go ahead on it”. It’s too long ago to remember now, however I normally would not install anything that had not been “cleared”.
Here are the statistics on that one: KB4019112
May 2017, Security and Quality Rollup For .NET Framework. It only goes to 4.6.2. 77.8 MB. Published 5-9-17
I already installed the MSRT without incident.
***********************************************
With reference to ALL ” unhide all .NET Framework updates” – – – –
the only ones I have remaining are ALL in the “Optional List“. They are: KB4042076, 61.6 MB – – – – -Published 10/17/17. Security & Qual. Rollup. Goes to 4.7.Next: KB 4043766, Published 10/10/17 – – – – Is italicized, *Has Recommended Update” noted. Goes up to 4.7.
Next: KB3186497, Published 6/27/17, 47.5 MB, NET.Framework for win 7 &Win Serv 2008 R2. Is italicized. “Has Recommended Update” annotated. I don’t have a clue as to the reason this one is so “old”.
As I mentioned these are all “Optionals”. I’m sure I have the (Important) September 2017 Rollup hidden (KB4038777 – – – – 198.5 MB. I’m the Group A (Win7. x64, Home Prem).
***I may have hidden the .NET Framework Security Monthly Quality Rollup KB4041083 – – – – 61.6MB. Dated 9/12/17. I will check that to be certain. That one was “Important”
I note that there are a LOT of hidden updates, and I’m not sure how to “clean this up”.
ALSO, the OLD ONE – – – – KB2952664. This one is dated 3/15/17. Recommendations have been varied, so I’ve just left it in the “Optionals”. Should it be hidden, or just continue to leave it in the “Optionals”? I always hide the PREVIEWS as those are the instructions I’ve always seen for the PREVIEWS.
One of the reasons there are so many hidden is because my “updating” process was broken so that I “could not” DL & install so many updates successfully because of the “error which is the subject of this Topic. Without your help I would NEVER been successful with those updates which could not be DL & installed.
Onve again – – – – – Thank you, thank you, thank you!
