In either case, Win10 22H2 or Win11 23H2, the update to Win11 24H2 is a full version change. No Enablement Package jump. Susan is still somewhat hesitant about the move to 24H2, but is beginning to look in that direction. You should update your hardware drivers before you start – particularly the video driver and any firmware updates – to avoid a BSOD. Also, you should make a full disk backup of the computer before upgrading, in case things go pear shaped and you have to go back.
You still have 4 months before EOL.

If the computer originally came with Win11, and you installed/downgraded to Win10, you shouldn’t have a problem reinstalling Win11 24H2, providing it meets the hardware requirements.

There are several ways to move from Win10 to Win11:
+ If the computer does NOT meet the hardware requirements for Win11 24H2, you will need to use Rufus in order to bypass the requirements to do the upgrade. At minimum, I believe you will need to have TPM2, SSE 4.2/POPCNT.
+ If the computer Does meet the requirements for Win11 24H2, you can use Group Policy TRV (Pro Edition only) or InControl to initiate the offer to download. Then use Windows Update, WUMgr, WUA Mgr, etc to manage the upgrade.
+ OR You can download the Win11 ISO from Microsoft download center, mount it on the running OS, and and do an over-the-top upgrade keeping your data and apps.

I updated to windows 11, 24H2, and it required some effort. First tried setting InControl to 24H2 and running Windows update. Hung during download many times. Turned InControl off completely, same behavior. Finally used WAUManager and that worked, BUT it required uninstalling Sandboxie (said incompabible). Any thoughts on what to replace it with, or if I can just reinstall Sandboxie (or Sandboxie Plus)?

InControl only controls version updates (23H2 -> 24H2) and feature updates (Win10 -> Win11). It does NOT have any control over Monthly updates or Optional updates – they work as normal.

Downloaded this program, seems to work well. Any idea how it will interact with InControl from GRC? Play nice, or fight? I’d like to stay at Win11 24H2 but still have all the other stuff updated. Thoughts?

After patiently waiting for the word to move to 24H2, I finally did it this week. Or I tried. My 1 year-old Samsung laptop computer took it without a hiccup, although the download took over two hours. But my two-year old HP desktop computers seemingly refused the update when I turned off InControl. All three computers are mostly similar, with the i7 Intel chip, and lots of hard disk space. I’m not geeky enough to wade through the other requirements to see what the shortcoming is. Frankly, I can’t see any difference on the computer that upgraded, except that desktop icon arrows reappeared until I turned them off again.

I’m not trying to be critical of anyone or anything. I’m grateful for Susan’s advice, and I generally follow it for all update matters. I’m just somewhere between amused and confused, wondering if my machines will now refuse all new major updates and if I really care.

Thank you both for your fast replies. I watched  videos about how to create an image disc and create a recovery disc and did both. Today I released control with InControl. I then highlighted 22H2 and changed it to 23H2. I then opened updates and selected Resume updates. Everything went smoothly and in just a few minutes my laptop had updated to 23H2. I want to thank Ask Woody for providing valuable information to dummies like me. It is well worth it to be a Plus member. Your newsletter has saved me a lot of headaches and I appreciate it very much.

On Win 11 23H2 system I’d been deferring upgrade to Win 11 24H2 with InControl, which I now have set too “11” & “24H2” & “TakeControl” I tried a feature upgrade to Win 11 24H2. Wumgr download/install seemed to go well, ending with “Windows 11 24H2 completed successfully. You need to reboot.”
After reboot, however, Windows still showed “Windows 11 23 H2.” Wumgr Update History showed six iterations of Win 11 24H2 “In Progress.” How do I delete the “In Progress” installs and start over?

    • #2777761

I have used INControl to stay on Win 11 23H2 until now. Just set it to 24H2, went to windows update, and started the download. The download is VERY slow and has failed between 10% and 16% three times now. ANy thoughts?

Win11 24H2 is a full install, not handled with an Enablement packages.
+ You can use Windows Update to do the install when 24H2 is offered.
+ You can use InControl to initiate the offer for 24H2 by “Release Control” then setting the values to “11” and “24H2” then “Take Control.”
+ If you have the Pro version, you can set Group Policy TRV to “Windows 11” and “24H2.”
+ You can download the Win11 24H2 ISO from Microsoft and do an over-the-top upgrade keeping you apps and data.

+ If your computer does not meet the requirements for Win11 24H2, you can use Rufus to bypass most of the requirements.

One last entry for me before I just sit back and wait.  InControl now reads 11 & 24H2.  Gpedit remains “not configured.”  We’ll see what happens.  I also ran the Windows Health Check tool, which reported everything okay.

PK and Casey: sorry for misunderstanding. I finally have this set right: InControl needs to read “11” and “24H2” – then Take Control

      Wumgr shows “Win 11 24H2  Downloaded 5/13/2025 (!)  KB50588411 ”

Wumgr  Update History shows six iterations of Win 11 24H2 “In Progress”.

On lower left of Wumgr “Download wsusscn2.cab” is checked and greyed out. (Never noticed that before.)

    • #2777558

Wait. You stepped in the middle of another conversation with Casey H.
What do you want? 23H2 or 24H2?

If you are on Win11 23H2 want 24H2, InControl needs to read “11” and “24H2” – then Take Control
If you are on Win10 22H2 and want Win11, you need to “Release Control” then enter “11” and the version you want (either “23H2” or “24H2”), then “Take Control”

If you have Windows Update Paused, or you are using WUMgr to stop updates, you need to UnPause or change WUMgr so that Windows Update Service can run to offer you the update.

    • #2777552

Thanks PK. I did try that.  InControl shows ver. 11 23h2 in bright red and also offers “Take Control”? Is that right? Even if I blank out “11 23H2”, it doesn’t remain blank next time I open InControl.

    • #2777551

I did. I have now changed InControl to all blanks and changed the Gpedit setting to “not configured.” 24H2 still not showing up. Casey

That response was for Casey H.

For InControl: Release Control then set “11” and “24H2” and Take Control
For Group Policy: set TRV to “Windows 11” and “24H2”

    • #2777544

Susan and experts: I used InControl to release the block on Win 11 24H2; then Wumgr to download and install Win 11 24H2, and got from Wumgr “Windows 11 24H2 completed successfully. You need to reboot.”

I rebooted and checked “This PC/Properties”, which still showed Windows 11 23H2. Also Wumgr still showed for Windows 11 24H2 “In progress”.

      Any ideas?
