Lately, when opening Chrome, it hangs. The little circle keeps going round and round and the page remains blank. If I close it and try again it loads on the second or third attempt. In fact, it’s doing it right now. My start page (a news website) is still “Loading”, so clicked on New Tab, typed in windowssecrets.com/forums and came here to the forum with no problem.

The problem occurs when launching Chrome directly from the quick launch area of the taskbar. And, it also occurs when launching it a different way, namely by clicking on the Inbox link in my instant messenger which should load my email website. So, Chrome can be launched from two different sources/locations to load different pages and it hangs in both cases.

I ran CCleaner a few minutes ago to no avail.

Any suggestions on how to overcome this annoying little problem, please?

This morning there was a warning on one of our machines running XP Home, SP3, that the firewall was off. I went through the steps to enable it, but got “Could not turn on Windows Firewall…. To turn on manually go to Control Panel.”

In Control Panel selecting Windows Firewall I got, The firewall settings cannot be displayed because the service is not running. Do you want to start the service?” Clicking YES brings up, “Windows cannot start Windows Firewall.”

Have run CCleaner and got rid of some junk, not a huge amount, and am presenty scanning with Malwarebytes. Any suggestions as to what would disable the firewall which has always been on? Also any other scan I should do?

Hello,

This is my first post here — I hope I’ve reached the right place for my question.

I recently discovered the Windows Secrets website, and Fred Langa’s article on doing a non-destructive OS reinstall caught my eye. I have Vista x64 Home Premium SP2, and (as you can imagine) after four years the system is running sluggishly. I’ve defragged the hard drive, used Disk Cleanup and CCleaner, cut down on the number of running services and startup processes, and scanned my PC for malware using both my regular suite (Norton 360) and various other vendors’ Live CDs to make sure that it’s not a security issue. After all that, my system still runs annoyingly slow — too often, opening IE8 or Outlook is like dripping molasses.

Therefore I would like to try Fred’s method, which I understand also works on Vista. The trouble is, Hewlett-Packard didn’t provide Vista installation DVDs with my PC. All I have is the recovery partition, and the “recovery discs” that were created way back when the computer first got set up.

So my question is: Will Fred’s method work if I use these “recovery discs,” or do I need to somehow track down an actual HP Vista x64 Home Premium DVD to get it to work? Is there a third way (Vista ISO, whatever) to get the method to work? I searched around the forum here, but I didn’t find any threads that (to my knowledge) matched my case exactly, and this is the type of situation where I’d rather not start assuming things.

Thank you very much for any help or guidance you might offer.

Should this query go under XP, or Browsers ? On the basis of more people being active here, this is where I’m posting it.

XP with all updates; Google Chrome 20.xxxxx

In the last few days YouTube starts to load a video – that is the loading symbol runs for a second or two – and then a message “An error has occurred. Please try again later”. This is happening off a link or directly off the You Tube site. This is over the last couple of days – it was OK earlier in the week.

I’ve seen a suggestion that Flash 11 might be the problem. Apart from the fact that I can’t immediately locate where Flash is on my PC, I did do a download of Flash 10 which recommended removing all existing versions; CCleaner told me that I have V10.3 on the system anyway, so that download wasn’t necessary then !

I did a search here to see if there were any recent queries like mine, and did find a thread in which the Flash 11 problem was mentioned, but that was a way back in May and doesn’t seem to relate to this very recent failure.

Anybody got any ideas ? One thing I should do is to try another browser – realised that as I was writing this and will now go and do so.

Rob

Edit: Should have posted in Browser after all! Seems to be a Google problem as Firefox runs YouTube OK.

I know I have a paper I wrote in here somewhere called “Best Practises” w/ heaps of good stuff to follow.

Just thought I mention/remind that there are 3 basic things do to, @ least daily, that are suggested as minimum household chores:

1. Internet Options – Delete & Delete
2. CCleaner
3. Disc Clean ‘on steroids’

Helps keep the machine humming along nicely.

And things like Windows Updates & MSE or WD happen, by default, @ night BUT, only if the machine is ON or Asleep. You may be screwing yourself if you keep shutting the machine off all the time.

Cheers,
Drew

I just got the option to keep what I type in Run back again. I’m about to run Ccleaner and I need to know if running it after choosing Default settings, will clear Run items.

I’m so afraid of messing up Run again, that I will not run Ccleaner until I’m assured that will not happen.

You’re help is desperatly needed in this matter.

•Added Windows 8 Release Preview compatibility.
•Added Opera 12 support.
•Updated History cleaning for Aurora.
•Updated History cleaning for Chrome Canary.
•Improved UAC bypass code.
•Improved accuracy for uninstall items installation date and size.
•Improved Scheduled Tasks detection.
•Improved cleaning algorithm duplication detection.
•Improved file and setting removal when uninstalling.
•Minor bug fixes.

Version 3.20 of CCleaner has been released! We’ve packed this update with new compatibility with Windows 8, the new Opera 12 and a Context Menu manager for Windows Explorer to disable any annoying menu items you don’t need. See official release notes here.

Owners of CCleaner Professional can use the automatic update feature from Piriform to download and install the update automatically.

I can always tell when clients have not been diligent in using CCleaner cus, they won’t be on the most current version.

Don’t think of CCleaner like a yearly doctor visit… more like brushing your teeth… it’s regular maintenance.

http://www.ccleaner.com

But, People, IF, you use CCleaner on a regular basis (Read, daily) you will, of course, be notified by CCleaner itself when new versions come available. Right, People? (Hint, hint 😉 )

And remember, Folks, uncheck the Jump List item in CCleaner.

Cheers,
Drew

I downloaded MS Windows8 Consumer Review ISO(64bit) and setup/installed it in Oracle’s VM VirtualBoxv4.1.14 according to instructions Fred Langa had in his article “Step bystep: How to safely test-drive Win8”. I had no problems.

I downloaded MS Windows8Release Preview ISO(64bit) to be installed in Oracle’s VM VirtualBoxv4.1.16. In another topic the DNS cache was mentioned and it made me a little curious.

I run Ccleaner every couple of days and the the DNS cache option is unchecked.

Would it be wise to add that so Cclean cleans the DNS cache when I run Cclean ????

I don’ install pictures, video or sound and didn’t install MS office and it keeps growing.:o:

I use malwarebytes & CCleaner and have Microsoft Security Essentials running but the downloads folder is empty….. and don’t understand this.

Has anyone ever used the black viper vista thing (that I found) to install or get Vista a little slimmer?

Hey all,

I recently started working at a law office in which an HP Compaq dc7100 Convertible Minitower (CMT) is used to store client’s files. Sometimes, clients will bring in information on a USB thumb drive, which I found no one can access. It appears that the computer’s USB ports will not recognize USB drives, and I have been assigned to resolve the problem, sadly enough.

I’ve tried almost everything I can think of, but I can’t get the irrepressible ports to work at all! They work fine with a USB mouse and printer, but they will not respond to any thumb drive, regardless of port. I always get the “a USB device not recognized” error, even though I know the thumb drive is fine. The computer is running Windows XP Pro SP3 with all updates installed. I’ve double checked Windows Update for any USB driver updates, but no luck. I’ve also tried:

1.) Checking thecomputer’s OEM webpage for any USB driver updates or other driver downloads for the machine. I did download and install the latest update for the system BIOS and the chipset driver, as I felt those were two of the most important driver updates the site offered, but no luck.

2.) I deleted the USB thumb drive’s driver in Device Manager, entitled “Unknown Device” and removed and reinserted the device in all the USB ports, but the “Unknown Device” driver is always installed.

3.) I deleted all USB drivers and the hubs from Device Manager and rebooted, letting Windows find and install all the USB drivers again, with no luck.

4.) I even got sneaky and selected the “Show hidden devices” option in Device Manager, and deleted all the “ghost” USB device drivers that were grayed out, and rebooted as well, but that didn’t help.

5.) I took step four to the next level and downloaded and ran USBDeview, which is a handy utility to view all installed and connected USB devices on the machine, including their drivers. I selected all the USB devices that did not have drivers installed or were not working properly, including the “Unknown Device” entry, and deleted those, and restarted Windows. It was an exercise in futility.

6.) I ran AVG PC Tuneup (which was already installed on the PC) as well as downloading, installing, and running CCleaner. I cleared out all temp files and other junk, and cleaned the registry with both utilities, on the off-chance that there was a bad registry key. I also checked the volume for errors, but CHKDSK found none.

7.) I downloaded and ran a couple of Microsoft Fix-its: 50606 & 50052 from Microsoft’s Knowledge-base that claimed to address the problem, but they didn’t do anything.

8.) As a desperate measure, I downloaded and installed a third-party driver locator and installer, which I’m loathe to do. I got the free version of DriverMax, and had it scan the system. It found updates for all the USB hubs, but even after downloading and installing the drivers and then rebooting, it didn’t change anything.

9.) I’ve read in a couple of websites on the subject that sometimes unplugging and walking away from the computer for a few minutes can help, as it resets the motherboard controller and refreshes the USB controllers. So I powered down and unplugged the machine for a couple of minutes. It didn’t work for me.

I’m really out of ideas here; usually one of the above methods will fix the problem, but in this case the USB ports remain as stubborn as ever. Based upon my above approach, there are a few things I’ve concluded: the hubs do work, because the printer and mouse work and install in any port without issue; it isn’t a BIOS issue, because I checked the BIOS to see if the USB devices were disabled, and there was no such option; additionally, the BIOS recognized the USB thumb drive when it was connected after I selected the “Boot Order” option.

I think it may be a driver issue, because when I checked the “Unknown Device” entry in Device Manager, the status box reported that the driver for the device was not installed. Now I have no idea how that might have happened; I’ve checked with everyone who used the machine before I did if the ports ever worked, and they reported that they didn’t know anything about it and that as far as they knew, the USB ports for thumb drives never worked on the computer.

I checked the system’s spec page and found that all the USB ports supported USB 2.0, so it wasn’t a power draw problem, especially since the error persisted after I plugged the thumb drive into the rear ports.

According to this helpful Microsoft Support Article, one of the issues that can affect USB efficacy in XP is a “malfunctioning, incorrectly-configured, or missing device driver.” That sounds like my most likely issue, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that were the culprit, rather than a corrupt registry entry or a bad USB hub or controller.

Would anyone have a driver or a link to a driver download page that would have a USB thumb drive device driver for XP that I could install? Maybe that would help me, since I’m out of ideas. Any other suggestions are whole-heartedly welcomed!
