Gathering for the holidays — via tech

It’s that time of year again!
I love the end-of-year holidays. Right now, Hallmark Christmas movies are playing on my television while we sort through decorations on the living-room floor. (Like over-eager kids, we like to start the season early!)
This is the season when we’d normally be crowding together in kitchens and living rooms to share edible treats, swap gossip, and watch sports and holiday movies on the tube. But, of course, this year is unlike any other we’ve experienced.
To stay connected with friends and family, we’ve had to become more creative. And much of that creativity relies on technology.

In these days of home sequestering, it’s good to have a selection of communication options.
Microsoft’s Skype is one of the easier choices because it comes standard with Windows 10. But it can also be installed on other platforms including Android, iOS, Linux, Mac, and earlier versions of Windows. It can even run as a Google Chrome extension. So almost anyone with a digital device can use it to connect with others.
Since acquiring Skype in 2011, Microsoft has added a variety of new features — to the point where some folks find the program overwhelming and awkward to use. Fortunately, there are easy ways to make it smoother and more friendly for general chatting and video conferencing.

As never before, video chat services such as Amazon Chime, Apple FaceTime, Facebook, Google Duo, Skype, and Zoom are helping to keep us together. Your family and friends might be spread all over town, the state, the country, or even the world, but thanks to the Web you can still talk to them all face-to-face.
