    ASKWOODY ALERT!

The sky isn’t falling, but you should patch XP and Win7 systems ASAP

Yesterday, Patch Tuesday, Microsoft posted a fix for a “wormable” vulnerability in Windows 7, XP, and related servers.

Yes, you read that correctly; there’s a patch for XP, too! This is one of those rare occasions when installing a patch right away is warranted. There aren’t any exploits running around just yet, but you can bet there will be a self-replicating worm out and about in fairly short order. Probably two.

As of this morning (Wednesday, Patch Tuesday + 1), I hadn’t seen any debilitating problems in the XP and Win7 updates. But, yes, you might have to go back and fix still unknown bugs. Even so, I think the potential threat from the vulnerability makes it prudent to immediately patch the afflicted systems — once again, they include Windows XP (including Embedded, Server 2003), Windows Vista (including Server 2008), and Win7 (including Server 2008 R2).

Meanwhile, if you’re running Windows 8.0, 8.1, or later, you’re in the clear — it’s safe to wait and see whether there are any major screw-ups.

Tell your friends! Even if they haven’t patched their XP or Win7 PCs in years, they need to get this one installed.
