A little while ago I bought a new laptop which, I was assured, had Windows 8.1. Needless to say when I got home and turned it on it had 8. No amount of screaming and shouting at both the retailer and manufacturer would get me a refund.
After a great deal of time wasting it eventually upgraded itself to 8.1 and then (like of other machines) decided it wouldn’t upgrade. It appeared the only solution was to start again and reload 8. Again the manufacturer was less than helpful and would not supply me with an 8.1 recovery solution even if I paid for it.
As it got little use and worked fine I decided not to bother with the upgrades as Windows 10 was on the horizon. Today I decided to bite the bullet and reload to get ready for 10. I started the machine and I got the ‘do not turn off while Windows configures’ screen. It whirred, wizzed and rebooted. It then told me I had updates to install. Strange, it has never done that before. Lo and behold it actually downloaded and installed all the updates it had previously refused to do.
Before I turned it on I connected to the network with a cable instead of wireless. I wonder if that made the difference.
