• Word 2007 margins need to be metric

Word 2007 allows one custom margin setting and 5 fixed settings. All the fixed settings are in inches Narrow 1/2″, Normal 1″, Moderate 1 3/4″ and so forth.
Is there a way to create pre-set margins for example Narrow 1cm, Normal 2.5 cm, Moderate 2cm, wide 3cm.
Or am I stuck with resetting the Custom Margins every time?
    Thanks,
    Judith

I’m using Word 2010 and my margin options are showing in cm. Have you set the options to Show measurements in units of ‘Centimeters’?

When you say you reset the margins ‘every time’ – why aren’t you changing the template so you only have to do this once?

I am currently upgrading to Word 2007. I have lots of templates: Wide A4, Wide A5, Formal A4 and A5, Casual A4 & A5, Booklets and Letters.
All these templates need metric margins.
I also receive documents written by other people and change the margins so my styles work properly, eg footer style has a right tab at the right margin.
Attaching their documents makes my styles available but does not change the margins. Depending on which template I have attached, I want to select suitable margins and all of Microsoft’s built in margins are in inches.
        Thanks, Judith

      Judith,

I have Word 2007 and work in inches, so I’ve only ever seen the built-in margins in inches.

If I click the Office button, then Word Options > Advanced then scroll down to display and change “Show measurements in units of” to centimeters, all the built-in margins change to centimeters.

Does this work for you? At least get you part of the way there?

        Kim,
Thanks for your reply. You probably think, as I did, that setting the measurement units to centimetres will give metric margins. It doesn’t. It changes the text instead. The margins offered become 2.54cm, 1.27cm, 1.91cm, 3.18cm, 5.08cm.

So for example when I want a style with a tab at the right margin, I have to put it at 15.8cm. And a centre tab goes at 7.9cm

This is why I always set my margins to TRUE metric values, 2.5cm, 2cm or 3cm. And that is why I want metric preset margins.

I guess I’ll have to give up and use default tabs of 1.27cm, hanging indents of 0.63cm, snap to grid 0.18cm.

        Thanks all.

          D’oh!

Well, that more than exhausted my paltry knowledge of the metric system as it applied to stationery. Hmmm.

Any chance you could create a macro to set your margins (and tabs and anything else)? Then you could put a button for it on the QAT and forget about the Microsoft’s Margin settings altogether.
