This problem began about a week ago. Whenever I shutdown my laptop (Start orb > shut down button in start menu) it goes into sleep mode. (The main power button on the laptop begins blinking.) There are no open programs at shut down. At first I wasn’t sure if it was sleeping or hibernating so I turned hibernation off (elev cmd prompt > powercfg -h -off.) Main power button still blinks at shut down.

I followed the suggestions in this Microsoft article, specifically “How can I prevent my computer from automatically sleeping or hibernating?” Didn’t help. I used System Restore. Didn’t help. I used a System Image from well before the problem started. Didn’t help. I returned my laptop to original factory settings using built in Dell Backup and Recovery Manager. Didn’t help. I completely wiped my hard drive and did a clean install with nothing else added such as Windows Updates, etc. Didn’t help.

This problem occurs if I’m running on battery alone, a/c alone, or battery installed but plugged in to a/c outlet. I’ve run several diagnostic checks such as Memtest86+, built in Dell diagnostics, SeaTools, etc. No hardware, CPU, GPU, etc problems noted. I’ve checked Event logs, nothing stands out.

I feel like this should be a simple solution. What am I missing? TIA.

Disable both sleep mode & hibernation and retest the shut down from the start orb.

Have you recently flashed the BIOS or had made BIOS level changes. Look through your laptop’s BIOS.

Thank you for replying, CLiNT. I have two power plans on this laptop. One is the default Dell power plan and the other is labeled Power Saver. Both plans show “put computer to sleep” for for battery and plugged in = Never.

        27296-Dell-default 27297-power-saver

Hibernate is also disabled. Verified by not appearing as an option in shut down button.

Last change to BIOS was March 2010. Also previously tried entering Setup (F2 key) and clicked on Load Setup Defaults upon exiting BIOS. Didn’t help either. Entering sleep mode all the time isn’t so much of a problem when plugged in to a/c. But it’s a hassle on battery power. I have to unplug battery to stop power button from blinking and draining the battery. My fear is the more I have to unplug the battery the more likely that something will wear out or break.

Bump. Anybody else have any ideas? Since even a format/reinstall hasn’t cured the sleep problem, I’m beginning to think it a hardware issue rather than software. My last diagnostic was with HWMonitor by CPUID. Any other suggestions on what else can I try?
