Hello…. [Please move this if it is in the wrong category] Trying to log on to our account with 1 & 1 for the purpose of renewing a subscription a pop up message prevents me going any further because it claims Java Script is NOT enabled but as the screen shot shows I have checked the setting and find that there is a tick in the appropriate box. How can I remedy this anomaly please?

Sorry Hans…. seems you responded before I explained the anomaly…. yes it was my intention to paste the two screens shots; the first showing the message saying Java Script needed to be enabled and the second showing it is. Don’t know if this is significant but there are no emoticons on the left of the screen either???????? Regards Dave .

That might be because JavaScript is disabled… See Optimal Browser Settings for Using these Boards.

Thanks Hans. I followed your instructions to the letter for both Firefox & IE [Java Script is ticked (enabled) in both] but there are still no emoticons showing on the left of this screen as has always been the case neither is the option for pasting attachments showing at the bottom right of the screen. Can you suggest anything that may have triggered this fault, I have not downloaded anything since the last post to the lounge. I have just tried to access my profile to see when I last posted with an attachment but clicking the down arrow in the “Options” field avails nothing so I suppose this is related to the same fault! Back to the drawing board it seems. Confused & frustrated…. Dave

AskWoody LoungerAugust 18, 2009 at 4:45 am #1173859Do you use a security suite that filters web content? See whether your security suite is blocking scripts on web sites.
Hi Guys; I am using Firefox 3.5.2 & have Zone Alarm installed; I also have Secunia, Superantispyware & Avira Antiver Personal for the occasional scan.
What puzzles me is – as I have already indicated – I have not made any changes of late to account for this SUDDEN anomaly. In fact I( have never had an errot message related to Java Script. Please remember guys my capacity to remember is waning and something that was explained at an earlier date tends to fall through the cracks. By security suit I suppose I should answer Zone Alarm!!!! Hopefully….. Dave. -

AskWoody LoungerAugust 18, 2009 at 10:03 am #1173898Do you have the NoScript extension installed in Firefox? If you do, you have to allow wopr.com, otherwise many features will be disabled, among which the smiley panel on the left and the attachment buttons near the bottom.
Hello Hans…sorry I haven’t a clue if the NoScrip extension is installed in Firefox. As recent as 13 August I submitted the post “Updates Switched off” and sent an attachment with it so all I can assume is that the some Firefox update [add-on] has messed things up so how do I go about scrutinising Firefox to locate the NoScript element that may be the culprit and how do I get rid of it when found? Many thanks Dave.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 18, 2009 at 10:18 am #1173900The problem is not with a recent update to Firefox itself – I’ve tested that.
If NoScript is installed, you should see an “S” in the lower right corner. The white “S” in the screenshot below means that no scripts were blocked.
You can see which add-ons are installed by selecting Tools | Options…
In the Main tab, click Manage Add-ons…

AskWoody LoungerAugust 20, 2009 at 5:27 am #1174194The reason I asked about a security suite is because you reported the same behavior in two different browsers that do not share components. This suggests an external cause. Does ZoneAlarm have web content filtering? Does its privacy protection disable scripts?
Hi Gents… the waters just seem to get more muddy by the day; if I can pick up from my first post, a subsequent reply from 1 & 1 suggested I uninstall Firefox and reinstall it to see if that would rectify the problem but acting on the advice of Hans I navigated to where the Java Script tick boxes are and found they were already ticked. Another later post indicated the fault may be from an outside source like Zone Alarm so I forgot about uninstalling Firefox. Just now I thought I would try to log on to the lounge using IE and to my amazement I find the smilies are visible as also are the attachment tabs so am I right in deducing that Firefox may in fact be the culprit and should I do as 1 & 1 suggested? Regards Dave.
PS Hans, in post 12 you made mention of a white “S” in the bottom right corner, did you mean to say Blue? I am confused already but will be more so if I am going colour blind. -

AskWoody LoungerAugust 20, 2009 at 6:54 pm #1174359Sorry, I meant a blue “S” on a white background.
Thanks Hans I was not making an issue of this little matter [a mountain out of a molehill] it’s just that I struggle so much coming to terms with all the signs, definitions, terminology, symbols and technical jargon in this I.T jungle, things need to be spelled out precisely I’m afraid.
By the way guys the penny -so to speak- seems to have dropped, Just before I logged on to the lounge I tried to log on to another site that I visit occasionally and noticed at the bottom left of the screen a prompt about script being partially blocked so I clicked on the Options tab in the bottom right corner and Hey Presto a menu popped up with the option to ALLOW this page. Upon clicking the “Allow this page” the warning disappeared so I logged on to the lounge, did the same and to my great delight I can now see the smileys and the “Attachment” tabs are again visible-hence the two screen shots for the benefit of any who are like me……. rather s….l…..o….w to catch on to the fast pace of change that seems to happen every day in this technological jungle. Anyway gents…. thanks for all the advice, seems I don’t have to reinstall Firefox after all.
Regards Dave.
PS It seems that the first two options in the 2nd screen shot are ticked by default which is just as well as I would never have been aware of them. -

AskWoody LoungerAugust 21, 2009 at 8:03 am #1174418I’m glad the problem has been solved. NoScript is a useful utility but you must take the trouble to allow sites that you trust. By default, all scripts are blocked, which means that many features will be disabled.
Thanks Hans…. must briefly reply anyway to say how much I really appreciate this forum. have learned so much since registering with it & as sure as God made little apples, it is inevitable that it won’t be long before I hit another hrdle that I need a helping hand to overcome. CHEERS to you all… Dave.

You can reinstall Firefox over itself to replace its core files. You should back up your profile folder first. See: Backing up your information.
If a reinstall does not help, you should try creating a clean profile. Creating a new Firefox profile on Windows @ MozillaZine Knowledge Base. It will look “factory fresh” except that it will pick up the plugins installed on your machine.
If that one works splendidly, then one of your Add-ons in your regular profile may be the problem, but it also could be a buried setting that is difficult to find. If the cure isn’t obvious, you can move your bookmarks and (selectively) your other settings to the new profile: Transferring data to a new profile – Firefox @ MozillaZine Knowledge Base.
Any luck?
