I think these are easy questions, but I don’t have a simple explanation myself, so …

Why does an autotext entry not assume the current document formatting when it’s inserted?

Even though Arial is the default font, why would documents switch to Times and Courier at random?

I think the following (from Word 2000 help file) relates to AutoText as well:

I want Word to stop formatting AutoCorrect entries with their original formatting.
If you create an AutoCorrect entry that contains text only, Microsoft Word stores the entry without formatting. If you create an AutoCorrect entry that contains a field, symbol, paragraph mark (), imported graphic, or an object other than text, Word preserves the entry’s original formatting. You can change these default settings when you create an AutoCorrect entry: In the AutoCorrect dialog box (Tools menu), click Plain text or Formatted text. When you insert an unformatted AutoCorrect entry, the entry takes on the formatting of the surrounding text.

Not sure whether the whole doc is switching or this is a copy and paste phenomenon. If the former, applying direct formatting can change the underlying style if an “update automatically” option is turned on somewhere. There have been threads here on this, but I haven’t retained the details, sorry.

      Hi Egghead:
To expand on one point that Alan makes, when you insert Autotext that contains a paragraph mark, Word follows the same rules that it does when pasting text.
      1. If the paragraph stylename that’s used in the Autotext entry is not used in the document, the Autotext entry will not change when inserted.
      2. If the paragraph stylename that’s used in the Autotext entry is used in the document (i.e. it shows up in the Format/Style/Styles in use list), the Autotext entry takes on that style already used in the document.
      3. Direct formatting contained in the Autotext entry always remains the same.

If you examine your autotext insertions in the light of those principles, it should explain what appear to be inconsistencies.

      Hope this helps.
