I installed the IE patch of 11th February (and the Critical Updates notifier at the same time). About a week later, I was reminded of the 12th February patch. (Both are now rolled up, I believe, into the 14th February patch.) All that happens, however, is once the Critical Updates pop-up has announced it is inspecting my machine (without sending any information to Microsoft), it hangs – for hours on end.
This originally arose with the fully updated version of IE6 – which I tried reinstalling, repairing and finally deinstalling – without any change to the symptoms. That is to say I now get exactly the same performance on IE5.5.
The OS in question is Win2K Pro SP2 – fully patched. (The other half of the dual boot WIn98 shows no such problems – unsurprisingly.)
I am beginning to suspect that the Critical Updates control – that is installed when one first seeks an update – has somehow become corrupted. Naturally, I would like to test whether that is indeed the case – much simpler than, say, an OS reinstall.
- Does anyone have a lead on what the control file is called – a first search on the MSKB didn’t produce very much?
- Does anyone have any other ideas/alternative paths to check?[/list]Edited by unkamunka 3-3-02 23:03 to add:
At a guess, the Control may be linked to the CV3 Class in the Downloaded Program Files folder. Any comments?
