• Critical Updates Hangs (IE6 (5.5 also))

I installed the IE patch of 11th February (and the Critical Updates notifier at the same time). About a week later, I was reminded of the 12th February patch. (Both are now rolled up, I believe, into the 14th February patch.) All that happens, however, is once the Critical Updates pop-up has announced it is inspecting my machine (without sending any information to Microsoft), it hangs – for hours on end.

This originally arose with the fully updated version of IE6 – which I tried reinstalling, repairing and finally deinstalling – without any change to the symptoms. That is to say I now get exactly the same performance on IE5.5.

The OS in question is Win2K Pro SP2 – fully patched. (The other half of the dual boot WIn98 shows no such problems – unsurprisingly.)

I am beginning to suspect that the Critical Updates control – that is installed when one first seeks an update – has somehow become corrupted. Naturally, I would like to test whether that is indeed the case – much simpler than, say, an OS reinstall.

    • Does anyone have a lead on what the control file is called – a first search on the MSKB didn’t produce very much?
    • Does anyone have any other ideas/alternative paths to check?[/list]Edited by unkamunka 3-3-02 23:03 to add:
At a guess, the Control may be linked to the CV3 Class in the Downloaded Program Files folder. Any comments?

Only data I have is from my own computer:
      IE>Tools>Internet Options>Settings>View Objects>Properties
      CV3 Class Version 5,4,5244,0

      ID:{CEBC955E-58AF-11D2-A30A-00A0C903492B}
      Location: C:WINDOWSWUPDMGR.EXE
This is of course WinME, don’t know if the data would be the same for other OS

Thanks, Lonnie! I have the same class on both W2K and W98 – although in both cases the key file seems to be wuv3is.dll. Reinstalling it, however, has brought no perceptible change. Having carried out no alterations to my machine between the 11th Feb Critical Update and its successor (when the problems began), it does seem as if the 11th Feb one had some unforeseen side effect.

The optimistic plan would be to sit tight to see if anything happens between now and the next Critical Update. If it does not, then I’m looking at an OS reinstall. snore

frown so sorry! I haven’t had any problems with the latest updates at all…although I have read of others with problems re 2/11 – different forum than here.
Wondering if this is just a ‘hit-or-miss’ type of problem…you know 1 out of every 3000 IE users gets the ‘crappy’ award for fun and games with updates??? evilgrin My thoughts will be with you and hoping you have plenty of coffee on hand for when you do have to tackle the task at hand… flee

Ubetcha! And the well-worn Lounge Windows boards favorite of running SFC doesn’t bring any change either. FWIW: plain vanilla Windows Updates are also OTL.

This may be completely unrelated, but I ran across this and thought about your problem:
          http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1003/%5B/url%5D

It might be worth a look… who knows.

The thought was very much appreciated. It appears, however, that the adding Stepping setting to the registry enables stepping through the actual installing of the Windows Update. I tried it, and, as far as the scanning of my machine (w.s.a.i.t.M) goes, the problem remains unchanged.

I’ve hung a few times with that message…

Clearing the Temporary Internet Files and History, then revisiting the page sometimes has helped

      Hi unkamunka:
Sorry to hear that your having trouble. I’ve appreicated reading your posts. Maybe WWW #5.04 will give you a clue. I didn’t install the patch, hoping for a modification. It hasn’t been modified yet.

      Good luck.
