    Hello, this is my first post here. Greetings to everyone.

    I inherited a PC that had WIN10 instlled, probably while MS was giving it away.

    I’ve managed to upgrade it to I think 1509, which is still a very old version. Is it possible to continue upgrading, is this the wrong path to take? Should I just buy a new copy?

    I’ve ignored Win10 for now because of all the horror stories I’ve heard. I’m a die hard Win7 fan.

    But I know soon I will have to update. From what I’ve seen so far it’s not too bad, barring the methods of how to get at things.

    Any insight appreciated.

      Michael,

      I’m assuming that since you’ve been ignoring Win10 that this PC has nothing on it that you wish to preserve that is unrecoverable, e.g. programs and/or data?

      If that is the case my suggestion would be to download the Media Creation Tool which will allow you to make a USB key with the latest version of Win 10. Then boot from that and you can do a clean install to get a nice new clean install of the latest 1809 version of Win10.

      I’d agree with RG that downloading the current Windows 10 MCT is a useful first step.  I’d also suggest that creating a backup of your current environment (OS and data) is a critical second step, the third step should be to verify that the backup is usable for recovering a blown upgrade — that step has saved my bacon a couple of times now.  Then, do an in-place upgrade of your current Windows 10 environment by running the MCT, use the create an .iso image option, use File Explorer to mount the .iso file, and double click on setup.exe.  That will start the update process.  After a bit you will get a choice about what to keep, usually with the options to keep your applications and files pre-checked.  Keep what you want, click OK, and let the update run to completion.  Hopefully that will get you on the current version of Windows 10.  If you run into issues, there are many folks on this forum who can help out.
