Design Pro 5 was freeware from Avery Dennison about 10 years ago. It was for a simple but good label making software.I still use it. When I went to install the freeware on a new computer ( Win 10  ) app and browser control detected “pua:win32/asktoolbar”. I deleted the maleware but found out this program is no longer available from Avery. The bad dpsetup.exe file was the only one I had. Since it was freeware I was wondering if someone had a set up file from an old copy of this program I could get  a copy of or a safe source from the internet. I have searched for and found several sites that offer a download of the file but I do not think they are safe.  Thanks,  CT47

I have and use Avery Design Pro 4.0 which I’d be glad to share.  How would we do this?

Is there private messaging on this forum? (i.e. what’s next?)

Yup.  In the to box type in ct47 and wait for it to resolve.  I’m not sure the site will allow you to save the software up there but could you swap a link on a shared site or swap email addresses?

Thank you for your help Susan. I have replied to Captain Al about sending the file to me by email.

        Hi,

Would it be possible to send me a copy of the software?

        Thanks

      Thank you Susan.

(By way of information, I did send a private message, but then when I tried to include the software along with it in zip format, I received an error indicating that it was too large a file … so we’ll have to do it another way as soon ct47 messages me back.)

        Thanks Captain Al,
Answered your message a few minutes ago. Let me know if you did not get it. I am not to computer literate some times. CT47

Captain Al,  I got the link and downloaded it. The next few days are going to be pretty busy. When I get Design Pro up and running I will let you  know how it worked out. Thanks again for your help.  CT47

Replying to everyone … This post provides steps to install and run Avery Design Pro software in Windows 10 (they are OK for versions 4 and 5).

In Windows 10 there are problems installing and running Avery Design Pro.  CT47 and I have collaborated to provide a process that overcomes the issues, and we are posting it here in case someone searches for solutions.

      Installation:

The problem encountered is that even with Compatibility settings made, the install will stop prior to completion and give an error message stating that the operator has aborted the install.  This is in spite of the fact that there will have been no ‘operator’ input that was made.

The solution is to still set the compatibility of the ‘setup.exe’ file to “Windows XP (Service Pack 2)”. Then when/if the install fails, just repeat it again.  Experience was that the installation will get further along each time it is run.  So, keep repeating the install process until 100% progress is achieved.

      Running the program:

A problem is generated by the program’s older ‘Help’ file, which is not compatible with Windows 10. This will cause the program to shut down until its settings are adjusted.

Follow these steps after the installation:

      1. Set ‘Compatibility’ of the Design Pro shortcut to “Windows XP (Service Pack 2)”.
      2. Start the program.
      3. At startup a Design Pro ‘Dashboard’ will display. In the Dashboard click ‘Create a Project from Scratch’.
      4. Create a “dummy project” by highlighting any of the Templates and clicking OK.
      5. The main window of Design Pro will attempt to display, but you will see, only for a moment, an Error Message. Then a website will open in Edge which obscures the Error message.  This web page will say ”Error opening Help in Windows”.  Exit the site by closing Edge.
      6. By way of information, after being closed Edge will, behind the scenes, create an “Auto-Launch” by registering the executable: ”C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe” –no-startup-window –win-session-start /prefetch:5   This is to run at startup and will be of no help toward actually running Design Pro, so if desired it can be disabled in Task Manager’s Startup Tab.
      7. As Edge is closed, you’ll be returned to Design Pro’s main screen. The error message can then be seen and it will say: “Failure to launch Help”, along with a prompt that says “OK”.
      8. Click OK and then in the top menu, select Tools > Options. In the ‘General’ Tab, put check marks in the following: 1) Bypass Welcome Screen; 2) Bypass Getting Started Help; and 3) Use Standard Interface (this will be the top item).  After clicking #3, “Use Standard …etc.”, the first two selections that were made will then become grayed-out.
      9. Click OK and restart the program to test that it satisfactorily works without being interrupted by the “Help” error.

Wow, Captain Al & CT47: what a nice collaboration! Although I don’t use Avery Design Pro, I’m sure there are others who do, and they will appreciate the time you spent and the level of detail you posted for them to be successful!
