someone who posted with a nonexistent email address, including “anonymous@askwoody.com,” cannot subscribe to a forum topic and receive notifications about it.
Someone using a one-time random mail address cannot subscribe to a forum topic and receive notifications about it, either.
Looking forward to see the change in action.
Outlook Online allows you add an email alias to your Microsoft account. See Add or remove an email alias in Outlook.com. You can use any giberish@outlook.com name you want. You can mark the alias to not be usable as a login. You can use it to associate an image at http://www.gravitar.com to display in this forum.
Your site, your rules; I don’t post enough for it to matter. However, I think what’s worse than anonymous posters are forum members who feel the burning need to insert themselves into nearly every thread because they think they are smarter or more knowledgeable than everyone else. That type of pseudo condescension is considerably more annoying than allowing anonymous postings.
And no, I am not talking about members who are actually helpful (PKCano, for example). The ones I am referring to feel the need to up their post count as if there is some kind of Internet Academy award for doing so.
I doubt that this post will pass moderation muster but at least one person will read it. Take care and stay safe.
Clearly it passed moderation. 🙂 I don’t consider folks like PKCano as mere members, they are a vital part of the site. Moderating is hard. Any site can’t remove a post or comment merely because someone posts a lot. One has to follow rules. Currently this site is unlike any other site and in it’s current form it encourages even registered users to not log in. There are many a time that someone apologizes as they forgot to log in. It’s extremely easy to post with merely clicking on the captcha and thus make more work for folks like PK. I want to give less work for our moderators as well.

Good changes, Susan:
Can you add a feature that directs a Forum User to LOGIN first
if that User has attempted an anonymous post?
I recall a few times when I have replied withOUT doing a LOGIN first,
and that was ONLY because I found a particular article or reply
to be interesting enough to distract me from doing a LOGIN.
Put simply, I forgot to LOGIN.
A courteous reminder from your Forum software should solve that.
https://borncity.com/win/2022/06/06/hilfe-bei-onedrive-problemen-unter-windows/#more-24789 Scroll down to the bottom. The implementation will be like that, just asking for a name and an email address. The email address will not be posted on the site. You can enter in the normal site username so while you won’t be officially “logged in”, we will know it’s you and not anonymous@askwoody.com 🙂

Can you add a feature that directs a Forum User to LOGIN first
if that User has attempted an anonymous post?
In response to PKCano’s big deal, many times I get in my e-mail a new post to a topic I have subscribed to. It has a link in the e-mail to the post itself. I click on that link. Therefore, I am not at the top of the page where the login info is.
So, I start a reply to the post. Maybe, I am logged in when I start typing. Maybe, I am not. Maybe, I get logged out in the midst of my typing. But, I am not aware of my log-in status because I am way, way at the bottom of a long sequence of posts. So, AFTER I have typed the post (maybe with bolding, italics, links, attaching files, i.e., lots of effort to make the post) when I go to submit, I learn that I am not logged in. That prompts me to login. And I’ve lost everything that I’ve typed!!! I didn’t reconnoiter beforehand to copy and paste what I had typed. I simply responded to the notice that I was not logged in by logging in. And I assumed that after I logged in, what I had typed for the post would still be there.
It would be nice if we could know at the outset of typing a post (or even in the midst of typing a post) that we were not logged in. It’s not that I forgot to login. I tell you … it can happen sometimes that in the midst of typing a post, you get logged off and you don’t know it.
So, I would like to see the feature that @SupremeLaw suggests.
That would work.
Another way would be for the web page to remember what you had typed prior to the login and continue to show it in the reply box afterward.
That would work.
Anything that gives the desire outcome would be welcome — bottom line — I don’t want to lose what I’ve typed, just because I got logged out for one reason or another. As I’ve noted, you can be at or in a message box and can start typing without ever knowing that you are logged out — which happens because you are at a place on the page where the log-in status is not visible.
I logged myself out and yes, I see those two boxes, IF I am ready to begin typing in the message box. But, when I have typed and typed in the message box and THEN I become logged off, the two boxes above the message box are no longer visible because I have already worked down the page so that I am past those two boxes. I have no reason to scroll back up because I think everything is humming along fine. See these screenshots to show what I mean.
There’s another curious thing here. After I began typing the message above, this is what I see at the top of the message box. It says I am logged out.
I scrolled back up to the top of the page to see my log-in status. It says I am logged in.
And I was able to post the message as me and not “anonymous”.
So, in one place it says I am logged out and in another place, it says I am logged in!!
Can you list your browser, operating system, extensions and plug ins? I know that the site does tracked logged in via cookies for purposes of tracking ‘reads’ on the site, so be sure to whitelist the site if you have any extension that doesn’t allow tracking.
Susan Bradley Patch Lady/Prudent patcher
You shouldn’t get logged out in the middle of typing a post.
Short of mandating everyone log in – which I’m not going to do – there’s no native setting to do what you want. I honestly need to focus on the registration side of the site making easier for folks to manage the free and paid subscriptions. If something can be done as part of that project, then I’ll see what I can do. But I’ll be honest as a standalone bug fix it’s not on the tippy top of the list.
Susan Bradley Patch Lady/Prudent patcher
It’s still public. All you have to do is enter some sort of unique identifier and some sort of email address even if it’s made up. Right now I can’t tell anon person 1 from anon person 2 from anon person 3 and it’s hard to help people without the ability to know who we’re helping or at least to keep the impacted persons straight from one another.
Add to that if you post that you have an issue and I need to get you in touch with support from Microsoft for a repro, I have zero way to help you on a more on one to one basis.
Susan Bradley Patch Lady/Prudent patcher
So much for “Ask Woody”. Value of a public site disappears.
Nope.
To be fair, they explicitly said they weren’t talking about people like PKCano or the rest of the staff. (A mod is clearly part of the staff.) I don’t agree with their point, but I also am sad to see this feature go.
Forgetting to log in doesn’t make sense to me, since all you have to do is click that little checkbox the first time you log in. I intentionally avoid logging in so that my posts are judged by what I type and not people’s idea of who I am. I only signed up to pay for Pro, and used my normal email so I’d get the Plus Newsletter there. I don’t even consider myself someone who posts “on the forums,” as I nearly always just reply to the articles you guys write. I’d always seen these as more of a comments section than a community. Plus the fact that my posts had to be approved meant that I was sure someone on the staff had to read them.
It’s not a huge deal that I’ll have to set up a second account to be the one I post from. But it was nice to post anonymously, even if Google has started making ReCAPTCHA less useful to use, since it won’t let me just check a box anymore. I don’t get why Google stopped using my Google account to figure out I was human. I even have two-factor, so they know I’ve not been hacked.
I just push back against the idea that anonymity is a bad thing for the Internet.
All you have to do is put in some sort of reasonable name (swear words will be moderated off) and an email address (even if it’s made up) like every other site on the web. This site is the unusual one and makes it much harder on the moderators.

I just push back against the idea that anonymity is a bad thing for the Internet.
You are not alone: for instance the EFF and Bitsoffreedom organisations are fighting for years, comparable the same as encryption to protect civilians.
Read some at EFF
I can share a (now) funny experience which I had
at a popular PC hardware website, many years ago.
In one of their User Forum topics, I had simply
posted a straightforward and honest question:
“Is ‘VISTA’ an acronym for Virtual Instant Surveillance Tactical Application?”
The moderators IMMEDIATELY banned me FOR LIFE.
So, I re-registered using a pen name and
eventually was awarded BEST SOLUTION 33 times!
(I archived those 33 BEST SOLUTIONS at our website,
if anyone is interested: FYI lots of those SOLUTIONS
are now obsolete, however e.g. optimizing spinning HDD.)
The full article also appears in public newsletter:
https://www.askwoody.com/newsletter/free-edition-will-fastie-how-to-speak-machine/
Not that this impacts me at all, but if the idea is to allow you to distinguish between anonymous posters, then surely a name is enough to do that? Why do you require an email address? You mentioned that you don’t mind people entering a bogus email address, so why not make this field optional (and make clear that it is optional)?
But that would once again put me in the spot of having to manually edit/change/test every time the forum software updated. I want to get it to where I don’t have to keep worrying about breaking stuff/editing stuff every time there is an update.

Susan,
WHATEVER takes your time away from your superb insights about Windows Updates, should be reviewed ASAP for effective streamlining and/or immediate delegation perhaps to some intern.
Consider a “squeaky wheel” philosophy:
only squeaking wheels get immediate oiling.
For myself, I would prefer the ability to refer to the latest REPLY(s) by “HackerMaster” and/or any other chosen pseudonym RATHER THAN to multiple “anony-muses”.
my 2 cents
I’ve never really understood the argument for posting anonymously, given that those of us who post openly do so under user names that don’t identify us to readers or other posters, and doubtless a number of anonymous posters donate to the site and do so openly to those running it. I fully get that e.g a senior exec at Microsoft might not want the company to know that he’s posting here, but everyone has so many “anonymous” email addresses that maintaining his/her confidentiality would hardly be difficult – or, at least one would hope so for a senior exec at Microsoft!
As an ordinary poster I do find that a topic with several anonymous posters contributing to it means it can be difficult following the discussion because it’s impossible to know which anonymous poster is following up earlier comments, and which one you’re replying to as a result.
Currently this site is unlike any other site and in it’s current form it encourages even registered users to not log in. There are many a time that someone apologizes as they forgot to log in.
In this regard, it would be helpful to have the login cookie last for longer than it currently does. I’ve lost count of the number of times here that somebody’s reported having posted anonymously because they didn’t realize they had been logged out (through no action of their own). This adds to the “anonymous 1 or anonymous 2?” confusion, and itself creates more work for the moderators when the poster asks to have their post properly attributed.
I have a somewhat complex password for this site that I can’t easily remember, and having to log back in anew every so often becomes a bump in the road.
Suggestion: make the login cookie last longer!

Is Firefox your browser?
Would this make a difference?
Firefox: Tools > Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data > Manage Exceptions
Also: What are your settings (beneath Cookies) for ‘Logins and Passwords’ ?
Chrome also has Settings, but I’m not familiar enough with them to help.
So I’m editing some of the time out settings to see if that helps?
I tried this plug in https://persistentlogin.com/ and TOTALLY blew up the test site, so clearly that’s not going to work 🙂
Susan Bradley Patch Lady/Prudent patcher
I use Pale Moon, which is based on Firefox but not the same as FF.
In PM, under Preferences –> Privacy –> Exceptions, the site askwoody.com is listed to Allow cookies. Over in the Security tab, under Passwords the box for “Remember passwords for sites” is not checked. (Note that this didn’t prevent me from, for example, visiting Askwoody.com this morning without having to log in. However, some number of days from now, just as I had to yesterday, next time that I go in the cookie will have expired and I’ll have to log in yet again.)
I have a somewhat complex password for this site
And you don’t store it in a password manager that can enter it for you?
I’d be lost without my password manager.
cheers, Paul
My passwords are stored on a computer that has no access to the Internet (neither Ethernet nor Wi-Fi) and on a paper printout. I would not keep them on any device that ever accesses the Internet.
Why is this a plus article?
It isn’t. If you look at the green box at the bottom of newsletter posts, it has links to the newsletters the article is in. In this case, both. And the full note went out in the free newsletter to be sure no one missed it.
Good or bad and certainly not to upset anyone, I have to ask this question:
How many websites do you know of that offer all the help and nice features that AskWoody does, and don’t require you to log in? I personally have never found any.
How many websites do you know of that offer all the help and nice features that AskWoody does, and don’t require you to log in?
A perceptive point.
A great team here, no doubt! Yet some of the most amazing help has been by ‘anonymous’ question or reply posters. Often I have seen signed in members pertinent & clear questions go unanswered or written off. Sometimes there are glitches with your new system/platform that seems to fall on one person (Susan) to sort out with your new vendors/format. Not great when dealing with an issue that requires a timely response. It’s been a fab site, but it seems to have become so proprietary, and with many bugs…I just wonder what wise voices we will be losing. And privacy is a right. It will be interesting to see how few (or hopefully greater) help replies there will be on any topic, pedestrian or intricate.
And privacy is a right.
Who am I? Do you know? Is my privacy intact?
Indeed, yours is as an ‘MVP’ and other site Mods. But not as an anon.. you know mine? I completely understand the need for security from the site perspective, checking IP’s etc. I suppose it comes down to: a) last year’s (was it the wordpress hack?) needing pswd change suddenly; b) I was recently travelling, forgot site pswd, needed to ask a question, anon worked gratefully w/out ‘change pswd’ hoops/waits; c) a guest user on my PC, not having an account, I encouraged posting their question as anon to deal with their non-PC issue, was fine as long as using my IP.
So, in this crazy world, how do we balance privacy & security from both ends? TRUST! Hope you all work out the new bugs. Has been a blessing of a ref site thru the yrs. As an aside, I sure noticed a diff in the amount of google & other domain/cookies from this site since 1 yr ago (zero before platform change). Hope it works to alleviate time & stress on Mods and yet offers privacy to posters, and replies occur! L/time fan.
You’ll see tomorrow it’s really easy to just enter a name and an email address. If you continue to want to be ‘anon’ all you have to do is type in a made up name and a made up email address. But we’ll be able to identify anon number 1 from anon number 2.
Susan Bradley Patch Lady/Prudent patcher
Indeed, yours is as an ‘MVP’ and other site Mods. But not as an anon.. you know mine?
You’ve confirmed my point while also apparently missing it.
Who am I? Do you know? Is my privacy intact?
Yes, @bbearren, and yes, ‘MVP’, but other than those two bits of identifiable information pertinent only here at AskWoody, who am I? Who is @bbearren? Do you know? Is my privacy intact? What part of my privacy have I put at risk by being an identifiable poster here at AskWoody? My profile narrows it down to one of over three quarters of a million people—not much in the way of loss of privacy.
b) I was recently travelling, forgot site pswd, needed to ask a question, anon worked gratefully w/out ‘change pswd’ hoops/waits; c) a guest user on my PC, not having an account, I encouraged posting their question as anon to deal with their non-PC issue, was fine as long as using my IP.
Under Susan’s modification, “any made up name, any made up email” will provide the same functionality you describe. As for
a) last year’s (was it the wordpress hack?) needing pswd change suddenly
That issue is not exclusive to AskWoody, nor is it exclusive to WordPress hacks. It can happen almost anywhere.
I’ve lost count of the number of times here that somebody’s reported having posted anonymously because they didn’t realize they had been logged out
How can someone not realized that he/she are not logged on ?
On the every page at the top right you either have / don’t have log-in field.
True, but it’s all the way up at the top right.
If you haven’t logged in because you only intend to “browse” thru the new posts and then find one further down the page you want to reply to, it’s easy to forget you’re not “logged in” when you do so.
BTDT
Yes, that’s true that the Captcha is there if you are not logged in. But, if you learn this after you’ve typed in a reply, when you go to the top to log in, you loose what you’ve typed. You have to start all over again. It’s happened to to me many a time. And how if it happens, I ‘copy and paste’ my reply to somewhere else, so that I can ‘copy and paste’ it back after I log in.
True, but it’s all the way up at the top right.
On your keyboard you have “Page Up” and “Page Down” keys. Press and hold the “Page Up” key and you will very quickly arrive “all the way up at the top”. All that remains is to look right and log in.
Definitely NOT easy to forget because if you are not logged in you have to deal with the Captcha that is NEVER there when logged in.
Ah, but it’s precisely at that point that the user experience is most impacted by the login cookie’s having timed out.
The gist of the issue isn’t knowing that you are or are not logged in–it’s getting signed out frequently such that you keep having to log back in to be able to participate fully. Realizing that you’re no longer signed in is a consequence of this circumstance.

That is a matter of personal preference. I log out every time I leave the site. I often visit without logging in just to see what’s new. I only log in when I wish to reply to a post or create a new topic.
I know that I’m not logged in before I start a reply. It’s a simple matter for me to page up and log in and then reply.
Perhaps a separate “instruction sheet” is needed to explain:
To me being in this site as “Anonymous” without realizing it has happened a few times, even recently, when coming to see a comment on some new horrifying cybercrime I got an email with the link to the comment on this, because I subscribe to “Red Hot.”
I click on the link, then here I am, directly into the comment, then I have a question, because the posting is too telegraphic … then I write my question. Then, not realizing in the heat of the moment that I have not yet logged in, I hit “Submit.”
Then unexpected things happen.
There is no sage advice nor cure for this incurable condition.

One other thing that comes to mind: what is to stop a troll to take the same made-up name as another, legitimate anonymous commenter, and hijack a discussion?

Well it was fun and amazing to find AskWoody that would let us post without an account. At least one time it was a requirement to be one of anonymous here because possible repercussions were not known, thank you for the assistance.
Woody if you are still reading occasionally, thank you for and many others for getting this started and keeping it going also to Susan for taking the lead after his retirement.
Thank you to those who were inclined to reply and thanks for the thanks, I hope the help was helpful.
Yes, I do regret a few replies while being under the Anonymous banner…
Anonymity on the internet itself may not be bad, it is the mindset to abuse this resource. The staff has probably seen things/topics which are truly terrible! So I understand the change even it won’t be the same, also manually re-configuring a site after software updates is not fun! So goodnight and thanks.
That is a matter of personal preference. I log out every time I leave the site.
I never log out on my own. In fact, I typically leave several AW threads open in different tabs, and then refresh them every few hours to see what’s been posted since the last time.
The short cookie expiration date has actually resulted, more than once, in situations where I was still logged in when I started to write a post, and then by the time I clicked on Submit I had been logged out and the new post showed up with me as “anonymous”.
I guess that within two weeks, I will find out how the new system works. Would be nice if one didn’t have to find out, and could simply stay logged on until one specifically chose to log out.
If your system is accessed, that person will have access to everything you have left open on Internet. If your system crashes or fails, those programs are in an unknown state. Close what is not in use. Think clean. Think safety.
I typically leave several AW threads open in different tabs, and then refresh them every few hours to see what’s been posted since the last time.
That is a matter of personal preference.
When visiting the sight, I open “Recent Replies”, scroll through to see whatever may be new since my last visit, right-click and open, in a new tab, any reply to which I may (or may not) wish to respond.
If after reading the new reply I wish to reply to it, I can page up, login, compose and post a reply, close that tab, then return to “Recent Replies” and refresh that tab. Once again, I can scroll through to see anything new. If nothing piques my interest, I can page up, logoff, close the AW tab and go on about my perusal of the internet.
“Recent Replies” will inform one of anything new anywhere among the various forums, which is quite useful, a “one-click-wonder”, if you will.
So: how about a troll that choses to take the same temporary name as another anonymous and then hijacks a discussion?

Hello Oscar, Microfix, PKCano, CyberSAR, Cybertooth, Morty, SueW, et.al, I am the anonymous guy that posted back in March about “what has happened to askwoody” and what I and others thought. I posted #2431888 and #2433317 but BBearren #2433354 said it was not me because of the IP address. Well, it was me.
I want to thank Susan Bradly for trying, at least trying to allow anonymous posters over the objections of others. I remember Woody talking to a guy in a forum and told him to “join” even using a fake name and email address because he wanted the guy to participate with “some name” used, whatever that may had been. I feel the harder you make it to post here anonymously, the less people will try and participate to help someone. I even remember suggesting to Susan that if she looked at the ratio of “posts to thank you,” some offenders could be seen. Now it seems as I have been told by others here, some Askwoody MVPs have cleaned up their condescending and belittling attitudes. Good work Susan.
I feel people posting anonymously and then being reviewed for their content, should be allowed.
Thank you for reading this.
As you can see if you still want to be anonymous, you can, but the idea here is to at least make anon users be identifiable from one another.
I’d still like to urge folks to sign up – you’ll get a much better experience and less delay in posting.

There are many new people who visit this site now. Those of us old timers remember the “Windows Secrets Lounge” which was a great site too. The Windows Secrets Lounge was saved by Woody and his crew at that time when WSL was about to go belly up. Woody incorporated WSL and the WS newsletter into this site which took a lot of time and effort.
So much for the history lesson. The Windows Secrets Lounge was stricter and did not tolerate the breaking of its rules. If you broke a rule too often you got banned from using the site for a certain amount of time. Usually it was a few weeks, months, or even for good!
I just thought I’d pass this bit of info. along.
Bring back Woody. He needs to come back from retirement. He understood why people need to post Annon. I did not see this post until I finally got Internet back. Government shut internet down for 2 weeks. Woody would have understood that since he came from another country. Susan is from USA and has not experience the what it means. It seems this site is gone….Bye Woody and his great site and thanks.
