With several lifetime premium licenses, I’ve been following the threads at Malwarebytes concerning the 4.x beta testing.  In particular, there has been a slew of criticisms of the new GUI (the screenshots at Bleeping Computer show that they seem to have settled on one that is substantially less horrible than earlier ones.)  Frankly, the 3.x GUI was more than adequate, IMHO — intuitive and logical (as well as reasonably clean of silly eye candy).

      (Malwarebytes 4.x Beta GUI: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/252699-beta-4x-gui/)

I shall be waiting for a while before moving up to version 4.x (especially for some formal test results).

By chance I was successfully updating W7 on my old Acer 5611 laptop yesterday, and as I usually do when I take it out of its bag each month, I updated other programs which need regular updates including Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM) and I stumbled upon this new version 4.0.4.

Initially the update process got itself into a tangle because it needs new outgoing internet accesses and by default I block unknown programs and get a notification using Windows Firewall Notifier (WFN) (similar to the better known Windows Firewall Control?). I was unable to create the new rules quickly enough! I temporily allowed all outgoing accesses and the installation “apparently” completed successfully.

I then found that a full scan which previously only took 15 minutes or so, even on this slow PC, was still running at about 100,000 files scanned 2 hours later, so I concluded that this update had not completed successfully!

I uninstalled MBAM (using Revo uninstaller to remove some left behind files, but leaving in place the firewall rules), downloaded the MBAM version 4.0.4 installer (which is now a small online installer) and installed MBAM 4.0.4 again. A full scan now completed in about 15 minutes (from memory), so similar to previously. So if you have problems after an in place MBAM 3 update try a clean install from scratch.

My other, newer W8.1 PC updated its version of MBAM in place without any problems.

The UI has been moved around a bit and to my eyes looks less professional as a result, but most of the settings are still there. The problems with the MBAM service not starting on PC startup which plagued early iterations of MBAM version 3, do not appear to be there with version 4.0.4 (based on maybe 6 or 7 starts across 2 PCs so far).

      HTH. Garbo.

PS: I use MBAM Premium (I have a lifetime licence bought when these were available a few years ago) alongside Panda AV.

Garbo writes: Further to my comments above, the 2 extra MBAM files needing outgoing internet access for an in-place update from MBAM version 3 to version 4.0.4 are:

        C:\programdata\malwarebytes\mbamservice\instlrupdate\mbsetup.exe

        C:\program files\malwarebytes\anti-malware\mbaminstallerservice.exe

if you want to create outgoing rules for these before updating and possibly save yourself some problems e.g. if you normally block unknown outgoing accesses and do not get a notification when an unknown executable is blocked. I did not note the protocol (TCP, UDP …?) or ports used. (The mbsetup.exe is a temporary file and no longer present, so be careful if you delete firewall rules for executables no longer present. You may need this for a later MBAM update so it is probably best to leave the rule in place.)

It has been a couple of days now since I updated and so far I have not been aware of any differences between versions 3 and 4. I have had both scheduled “threat scan” and “hyper scan” occur in the background and not been aware of these i.e. no noticeable slowing down or excess RAM usage affecting my normal PC usage.

Looking at the “threat scan” report, it checked 231,199 files in 2m 21s (on a Dell Optiplex 790 with SSD C: system partition and separate HDD D: data partition running 64 bit W8.1 Pro).

Garbo writes: This thread may have gone cold, but a small anomaly I spotted yesterday:

I wanted to run a quick custom scan of a USB memory stick rarely connected to my PC. This would only take a minute or so to complete. I was offline and it takes 2 or 3 minutes for my modem and router to complete start-up, so I decided to run the custom scan offline.

The 1st stage of a MBAM scan is to check for updates, but as I was offline this could not occur. From memory (I don’t custom scan often) with previous versions of MBAM the scan would continue to the next stage (presumably using the old malware definitions it downloaded previously?), but now with version 4 it just gives an error message and the scan sequence stops.

So MBAM 4 is more “cloud integrated” (horrible phrase) and less functional than version 3.

        HTH. Garbo.

PS: I am less confident of the scenario here, but I have MBAM Premium (lifetime license bought a few years ago) and on a couple of occasions after being offline for a while it has reported that “malware protection” is Off. Clicking the buttons to switch it on did nothing. On getting the PC online again, after downloading updates the “malware protection” re-started without me needing to click any of the buttons.

So possibly the real-time protection switches off after being offline for a time? “Cloud integration” gone mad! (I haven’t had the PC switched on, but offline, long enough to be sure.)

PPS: WRT some of the comments here about using MBAM as an AV, I am not using MBAM as my only real-time protection, but in parallel with Panda AV.

          Greetings,

The experiences that you have related reinforce my decision to stay with MWB Premium version 3.8.3.2965 for the present (like yourself, I too use MWB as a “second opinion” anti-malware scanner in real-time, secondary to MSE on Win7 and Microsoft Security Essentials on Win8.1), as v. 4.0 is still relatively new, having only come out of beta less than two weeks ago, and no doubt will require tweaking (hopefully they will also 86 the new GUI and replace it with one far closer to that of v. 3x).

(FWIW, version 3.8.3.2965 continues to receive definition updates throughout the day and is still available for download; see https://malwarebytes-anti-malware.en.uptodown.com/windows/versions).

Hope this is useful; good luck.

          Cheers,

Garbo writes: Some more analysis wrt the “PS” in my most recent comment #2010267 above:

After trying out several scenarios I now conclude that with MBAM Premium version 4.0.4 the real-time “malware protection” does not run if the PC is started (from power-off) or re-started (from power-on) without an internet connection so that MBAM can connect to its “server”.

(It does continue to run (for at least the 12 hours or so I left) if the PC was online at (re-)start, but goes offline later.)

My guess is that this connection is to verify that the paid for “premium” license needed for real-time protection is still valid in some sense and this checking is now done even for a “lifetime license” like mine which never expires and is always valid, as well as yearly licenses which will eventually expire. (Maybe with earlier versions of MBAM there was a local check for a “lifetime” versus a “yearly” license?)

(After making a system partition image – just in case) I have uninstalled MBAM 4.0.4 and re-installed MBAM 3.8.3.2965 (I had its installer saved locally – just in case). Its real-time “malware protection” does start when the PC is started (from power-off) or re-started (from power-on).

Due to this flaky offline real-time protection issue I conclude that for Premium users MBAM 4.0.4 is inferior to MBAM 3.8.3.

        HTH. Garbo.

PS: Before uninstalling MBAM 4.0.4 I did try to repeat the “custom scan” failure which prompted my comment #2010267 originally, in both the PC start and re-start scenarios, but these times the scan did continue after failing to update when offline. Maybe there is another intermittant bug with the MBAM 4.0.4 custom scan and the sequence to trigger it is more complex than I was able to repeat? Anyway the real-time protection issue above is the bigger problem.

and this is why it’s better to wait for a bug fixed version of MBAM 4.x like either 4.0.5 or 4.1.0 rather than to rush in and upgrade to MBAM 4.0.4.

With this release, Malwarebytes considers itself an antivirus replacement and will now register itself with the Windows Security settings as the primary antivirus solution on the computer.

I will need some more convincing before I can consider MBAM as more than a second opinion malware scanner. But primary AV? Yeah, right!

        John (and AJNorth),

I could not agree with you more. That’s how I use it. But everywhere you look these days, some piece of software “wants to your everything”, i.e. take over your PC (oh, I’m sorry, it isn’t my PC any more-missed the memo!)

“It’ll protect your PC, it’ll wash the baby, it’ll feed the dog, it’ll fix the car, it’ll iron your shirts, under $39.95,  how do we do it? How do we do it??  It’ll avoid being detected, it’ll get you elected….” <SFX: user slamming pillow on face and shrieking.>

OK, end/humor…but this is just driving me nuts. They just don’t seem to be able to help themselves; Marketing rules all.  Aaaargh.

I’ll be waiting to monitor how the user reviews go before I seriously consider installing the new v4.x MBAM, and will stick with the most recent v3.x free that’s on all my machines for weekly on-demand scans as long as the malware lists will update.  I have used the app for years and started to download the new version from MajorGeeks this morning, but realized it was a stub installer file and then discovered what MB was pushing from their site was also the same stub installer.  I dislike stub installers intensely (hate is not too strong a term, so call it a trust issue), and will not quickly change in that attitude after a half-century of dealing with computers from big-iron mainframes to PCs.

I downloaded and used the free version this weekend. The interface obfuscates even further the Advanced Scan Options. I see the three options which were there in Version 3. Hyper Scan is Premium Only. Threat Scan is a standard scan of the system, not guaranteed to be a full scan of all accessible partitions. Custom Scan still does exactly what it always did. Instead of a string of circles or gears, the interface shows a checklist. No progress bar and does not show which file is currently being scanned. Scan times are similar to Version 3.

I also used AdwCleaner for the first time over the weekend. It’s still free and still maintained. Scans are very fast. only four new items not detected by other scanners. Two I wanted to keep, as they are involved in my Epson printer driver software. The other two were leftover traces of driver update programs. Those went out immediately. Powered

Not found were CCleaner and Avira remnants in a User Account. Removing them and updating the Microsoft Store App manually destroyed the User Account. Thanks, Avira and Avast!

What I did like about the 2.xx version was that one could download the most recent definitions without MBAM installed, not sure if this is still possible with the 3.xx version, anyone? EDIT: to answer my own question, no, not possible with V3.xx

well Microfix I still have the MBAM 3.83 setup file with certain Sept. 2019 definition updates included (mb3-setup-43841.43841-3.8.3.2965-1.0.625-1.0.12399.exe) – though I wasn’t able to obtain the newer mb3-setup-consumer-3.8.3.2965-1.0.629-1.0.13137.exe file before MBAM 4.x was released (I was out of town with my family at that time)

edit: indeed Malwarebytes has a legacy 3.xx version but it’s the 3.5.1 version that last supported XP & Vista. v3.6.x & higher require Win7 or higher

although this 4.0.x version does support minimum Win7 SP1, I will wait until a 4.1.x version comes out

Thank you for pointing that out; it is good to know, as I also use WFC — and have for many years.

It is also as troubling as it is bizarre.

After all, as you pointed out, WFC is now owned by MWB.  Indeed, in an article by Martin Brinkmann in Ghacks back on 2018.08.01, he wrote:

Malwarebytes, makers of the popular anti-malware software of the same name, acquired Windows Firewall Control in June of 2018.

And then went on to state:

Malwarebytes revealed in the official press release back in June that it had plans to integrate the solution in its core products (emphasis added). The company reassured users of the product that the program would be kept as a standalone program but that it would fly under the Malwarebytes branding in the future.

        https://www.ghacks.net/2018/08/01/windows-firewall-control-is-now-free/

MWB seem to have taken a page out of the Redmond playbook… .  Sigh.

Per this forum topic about Malwarebytes 4.0:

      https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/253227-announcing-malwarebytes-40-for-windows/

Which Operating Systems does Malwarebytes 4 support?
Malwarebytes 4 supports Windows 7 SP1 or newer.

We continue to support legacy XP and Vista with our Legacy version, you may download the latest available version for XP and Vista by clicking here.

Even though Malwarebytes does not recommend running operating systems that Microsoft no longer supports, we have no current plans of ending or phasing out in any form our support for Windows 7. This means that going forward, and until further notice, we will continue to support Windows 7 as we have up to this point.

FWIW, someone replied to the gripe I left on the MajorGeeks webpage associated with the new version’s stub installer, who pointed out the full offline installer file was available through a link provided in the second post about the announcement on the official MBAM forum found here.  The new file download is 147 Mb, so I’m still going to wait for awhile and monitor the user feedback before committing to the newer version.

But whether they recognise & respect or just ignore each other, I can’t say.

If what i read is correct it now considers itself a

full antivirus and therefore would override Windows Defender.

        Can anyone confirm this?

I have a lifetime subscription to the Premium edition.  After I begrudgingly updated to Win 10 (1803) I chose to use Malwarebytes (MWB) 3.0 ,and it’s other protective modules, as my antivirus and for protection against malware, etc. I also use it’s real protection and have included several other applications in addition to the default applications.

Although I have disabled Win Defender, I run it, from time to time, to determine whether MWB is doing it’s job. I also run several credible online scanners for that same purpose. There’s never been either a virus or malware discovered. Despite all of the articles that basically said I was putting myself at risk for not using a “real” antivirus, I remain confident that I am protected.

I use FF ESR as my sole browser in addition to many of it’s security add-ons. Edge has been deactivated to the extent that I was able to do so, as has Cortana and most all of the other Win 10 Apps which I don’t need or use. I do not go on unsafe websites nor do I ever use social media.

The new MWB 4.0.4.9 scans my computer, and all the added applications, in about seven minutes. Time-wise, I could care less how long it takes as long as the real time protection modules continue to do their job. That’s my two cents worth on this topic.

reading one of the recent comments about Malwarebytes 4 from majorgeeks.com
      https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/malwarebytes_anti_malware.html

Malwarebytes 4.x deletes the IOBit Advanced System Care program as noted in one of the comments. it seems Malwarebytes dislikes some apps from IOBit

also, need the full “offline” installer for Malwarebytes 4.0 (not the “stub” EXE installer that requires an internet connection)? read this forum post:

MWB calls it a PUP and indeed I would agree, got a driver program pushed on me a few years back.
Revo has a free version go with that.

The PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program)/Adware situation has been ongoing for years too, here are few concurrent links from 2017 discussing it, including methods to whitelist/avoid the problem that should still be relevant:

        Bleepingcomputer

        Iobit

        Malwarebytes

I have a lifetime, single, licence on MWB, which I have not upgraded since v 3.8.3.  I must have had reminders every six hours for the past week of the new version, and feel torn between taking the upgrade and uninstalling the whole (stupid) thing.

      Is the upgrade worth taking?
