    I am getting a a new pc with xp home loaded on. I have been using win ME so I am unfamiliar with xp. Please recommend some good books/manual as a referencce for me to use.

      Check out Woody’s book. It is a Dummy’s type but is very good. It can be found at most book, computer and online stores.

      Wow, quite a few books,

      Can you maybe get it down to 2-3 must have books, maybe a detail book, a tips books.
      Remember, I’m a newbie. I’ll keep the list for future reference, including the NY times one you referred to.

        The one I like besides Woody’s Dummy one, is “Windows XP Inside and Out” by Ed Bott and Carl Siechert. It covers both Pro and Home. Pricy $44.99 list, but worth the extra money. Comes with CD, and may be cheaper online.

        If you are new to Windows and computers, I think the Master Visually Windows XP (usually on a Master Visually Bookshelf in a large store) will help a lot. Also Sams has a Teach Yourself Windows XP in 21 Days. My third would be David Karp’s Windows XP in a Nutshell and anywhere in the top three might be Woody’s Windows XP for Dummies.
        When it comes out in late June I would defnitely pick up David Pogue’s Windows XP: The Missing Manual (O’Reilly).
        Later on, Windows XP Inside Out with it’s convenient E Book on the disc (Microsoft Press) by Ed Bott is an
        excellent and really popular book. Microsoft Tech Support for Windows XP refers to it frequently.
        Be sure to hit Microsoft’s XP tips on their web site and Microsoft has a lot of Mini XP tutorials and
        How To’s on their site. Also check their “KB” for reference at support.microsoft.com and mouseover Support.
        There are good tutorial’s on http://www.techtv.com–search Windows XP and http://www.extremetech.com Sorry I still have not
        mastered the markup tags to hyperlink the sites.

        Brett–I noticed that David Pogue from the NY Times Thursday’s Circuits sections new book Windows XP: The Missing Manual
        has hit the shelves–it’s geared to Home which you have and I would always get his books on the flavor of OS I was using.
        Think it could help you . If there is a Microcenter in your area–it’s probably the best price. ISBN 0-596-00260-2.
        This and David Karp’s Windows XP in a Nutshell ISBN 0–596–00249-1 both from O’Reilly are a good one-two punch
        for getting a good start with XP. Then you can pull some of the other 30 something books off the shelf and see what
        appeals to you. They are on any of the book websites as well as http://www.oreilly.com

      Hey Brett–
      I can’t beat the free deal from piaqt on a good book but I have a few suggestions–most of these can be found in any
      large bookstore or at the usual suspects on the net. Barnes and Noble and Borders have fairly comprehensive
      XP sections with most of the main stream books.

      Here are a few I like:

      1) Windows XP in a Nutshell by David Karp /Tim O’Reilly /Troy Mott O’Reilly Excellent
      2) Windows XP Home Sybex Guy Hart-Thomas
      3) Windows XP Unleashed Terry Ogletree SAMS
      5) Windows XP in 21 Days SAMS

      Tips Oriented: 6) Windows XP Tips and Tricks Walter Green Rowena White McGraw Hill Osborne
      7) Windows XP Secrets Curt Simmons Hungry Minds
      8) The XP Files Guy Hart Davis McGraw Hill Osborne

      Pictures and Diagrams: 9) Master Visually Windows XP Marangraphics Hungry Minds

      There are around 32 main stream books at the beginner intermediate level.

      10) To explore Properties, More depth and tools like the Management Console, tools, snap ins networks

      Windows XP Pro Handbook (very applicable to home and these topics explore some very useful tools in an
      easy to understand format) by Louis Columbus and just out.

      When it comes out late in June from O’Reilly 11) Windows XP: The Missing Manual by David Pogue from
      the New York Times’ Circuits (Gear and Cyber Stuff ) section on Thursdays is always good and full of
      information not in some other books.

      12) Woody’s Windows XP for Dummies has a lot of helpful information and is written in a straightforward
      hands-on way that is easy to apply and well worth having.
