I have a user who’s having a problem with Excel attachments in Outlook 2K. When she receives a Word doc, she can doubleclick the attachment icon and open it right up. When Excel attachments are received, they cannot be opened from within the email …nor does the dialog box come up asking if you want to save or open the document. The only way to get to an Excel attachment is to go to File / Save Attachments. This problem started a couple of months ago and the user is not aware of any changes that were made at that time. I have not installed O2K SR1 or SR2 nor any security patches. We reinstalled O2K yesterday and the problem persists. Any ideas?????

      Edwina:

What happens when she double clicks the attachment? Does any program launch or does nothing happen?

I am assuming that the user has Excel installed on her machine. I am also assuming that the file has an xls extension. Question: Have you checked the file associations to make sure that the xls extension is still associated with Excel?

I forgot to include in my original post that when the user doubleclicks on the Excel attachment, Excel 2000 launches and then an error message appears saying that the file could not be located. Initially I thought the temp folder was full, but that is not the case.

I have compared the user’s file associations for Excel worksheets and workspaces with mine (which works fine), and don’t see any differences. DDE is enabled.

Can the user double-click an excel file from Explorer and get it to load OK?

No, the user cannot open the file from Explorer. Excel launches then displays an error message that says “Cannot find the file ‘[filename]’ (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.”

I think the answer then is from Explorer/Tools/Folder Options to delete all references to Excel files and close, double-click on any excel file and a window should come up saying there is no program associated with .xls
You then select Excel from the list, and select ‘Always use this..’
I believe this will rebuild all the correct associations.

I believe that did the trick!!!! Thanks so much for your help!!

Check the file association. From explorer, tools | options. File types. Is DDE enabled? Compare with a machine that is working correctly.
