A powerful portable desktop PC
Uh, no, NOT EVEN CLOSE. That’s an utterly ridiculous statement.
Good desktop systems last more than a year, have modular parts that can be serviced and upgraded, have power supplies that can support whatever computing needs you have, have keyboards that provide good tactile feedback… The list of significant differences goes on and on.
Perhaps the implication was that a system based on a mobile CPU could compute things as fast as a desktop system, or play games as well (though one reviewer states that the Surface Book 2 power supply isn’t even up to gaming). If that’s the case, let’s see the benchmark numbers, comparing this brand new design to a brand new desktop system (workstation) of a similar price. The results will be quite different.
Having just had to replace my son’s MacBook Pro keyboard, I know something of how state of the art modern laptops are put together. The hardware is necessarily microscopic, and (with apologies to those who have portable devices) is just not in the same league as that of real computers.

AskWoody_MVPNovember 17, 2017 at 12:10 am #145965Interesting how Macworld just talked about the mistakes Apple made and most were about the Mac laptops, ridiculous fragile keyboards, lack of ports to be cool and at last they admitted they were wrong and came back to Earth by saying that after all the touch bar wasn’t such a great idea.
It is insulting to people’s intelligence to read reviews that seem dictated by the company. When I see all this, I can’t help but think how bad this is considering this is only the not subtle at all part we see of all of this system of influence.

AskWoody MVPNovember 17, 2017 at 11:26 am #146082If Microsoft would market the Surface as a tablet and not a computer, and then lower the price to what you would pay for a disposable tablet, they would get a lot less complaints about the Surface.
They could even call it the best tablet on the market, which would be a true statement.
Instead, they continue to dishonestly refer to the Surface as a laptop computer and price it with the top tier of laptops.

ManagerNovember 16, 2017 at 9:42 am #145908Looks like the number of published reviews is up to 20.
Lots and lots of familiar names on the list. (But not me, I’m proud to say!)

GuestNovember 17, 2017 at 9:41 am #146041It’s really unfortunate that the Surface devices have been so plagued with issues (I’ve returned 3 different ones since the original launch) because the specs are really quite nice. Especially that 3:2 display. Maybe in a few more iterations they will settle into a groove that enjoys much better quality? Here’s to hoping.
